In November '23 my husband booked 2 return REFUNDABLE tickets for us for a trip from Glasgow via Dublin to New York. We also booked a hire car to be picked up in the US at the airport and an AirB&B. A month ago we started looking at Compare the Market type sites for Health Insurance. For ME. Not him, trying to choose which company would suit MY needs, him being in good health. Although retired, my husband was still teaching a foreign language to adults, 3 days a week & the other 2 days being a volunteer driver taking extremely ill Cancer patients from the Rural Area where we live to The Beatson Clinic in Glasgow for their various treatments.
A few weeks ago he felt 'tired'. No pain anywhere. No 'alarming' symptoms. GP took a blood test. As a result of the blood test?
11 days ago he was sent for a CT scan. 7 days ago on 18th April, he had an endoscopy and colonoscopy. To our horror he has Cancer. A 15cm Tumour that HAS to be removed in the next 2-3 weeks. Consultant said,'You cannot travel anywhere. The Oncology Team will have a case conference & decide a plan of action. However, you may need 'emergency surgery' before then, so stay at home and keep vigilant for various symptoms.
The Oncology Advanced Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist gave us a letter by email to send to British Airways in order to reclaim the money we paid on our REFUNDABLE tickets.
British Airways acknowledged receipt of our email & claim. My husband was told to 'phone' Customer Services.
You used to have a reputation for being amongst the best Airlines Worldwide.
Why are you employing people in India in your 'Call Centre' where their command of the English Language is so poor that they cannot read or comprehend a letter written in plain English?
Why did YOUR employee tell my husband who is still in a state of absolute shock that his claim cannot be processed until INDIA receives a letter from his surgeon here in Scotland about my husband's LIFE EXPECTANCY? As in, 'How long are you expected to live?

HOW DARE YOU train staff to speak to customers like this never mind a man who paid for REFUNDABLE tickets and is now ill with CANCER, who's Consultant has stated is in no state to travel anywhere.
Have your HR- EDI staff been taught that Surgeons in Scotland have Psychic Powers? Consult Crystal Balls? Or is it that you or 'they' believe that a Surgeon in a Scottish Hospital would lie about something so serious and distressing?
YOU, your Indian Call Centre Staff and their 'trainers' are in my opinion MONSTERS. Your Company's behaviour is REVOLTING and REPULSIVE. Not only completely devoid of sympathy, compassion or professionalism. Your attitude is as subtle as a brick through a plate glass window.
So 'Hey everybody. My advice to you is DO NOT TRAVEL WITH @British_Airways. Do NOT book tickets months in advance. Never get unexpectedly very ill. Their Customer Service Staff, several continents away, where English is their second language, despite having a letter from an Oncologist in front of them, won't believe you. They demand a letter wanting to know your expected DATE OF DEATH before they will consider returning your nearly £1300 on REFUNDABLE tickets.
