Elon Musk: "People get confused sometimes they think an economy is money , But money is a database
for the exchange of goods and services and for time-shifting the exchange of goods and services. Money is a database. Money does not have power in and of itself
You can run the thought experiment: if you are shipwrecked on a remote island and you have a trillion dollars in a Swiss bank account, "it's worthless"
You’d rather have a can of soup. You can have all the Bitcoin in the world and you’re still going to starve
The actual economy is goods and services”
This is a game. Play it the best you can, cheat the rules a little, create. Bring in a few new players and sneak out of the pitch when you get bored. You didn’t lose and you didn’t win. Wins and losses are inventions of the ego. You came here with nothing. You just had your fun.
I was in Switzerland this week for work and I am reminded that
👉🏾 1 in 7 Swiss is a millionaire in US dollars
👉🏾1 in 15 Americans is a millionaire in US dollars
👉🏾About 1 in 30,000 Nigerian is a millionaire in US dollars
Improving the number of US-dollar millionaires in Nigeria — or, MORE IMPORTANTLY, increasing broad-based economic prosperity — requires a multi-pronged, systemic approach. This isn't about just producing more millionaires; it's about creating an economy where more people have access to opportunity, wealth creation, and upward mobility.
👉🏾 Stabilize the Naira and Control Inflation
👉🏾 Support Entrepreneurship & SMEs
👉🏾 Invest in Education and Skills
👉🏾 Strengthen Key Economic Sectors
👉🏾 Attract and Retain Wealth
👉🏾 Improve Governance and Fight Corruption
👉🏾 Boost Financial Literacy and Investment Culture
Improving this ratio (from 1 in 30,000 closer to 1 in 1,000 or even 1 in 100) takes time — decades, not just years. But the result isn’t just more millionaires. It’s:
•A bigger middle class
•Lower poverty rates
•A resilient, inclusive economy
If you had planted $10,000 (₦15M) in the right place 10 years ago, today, you’d be sitting on ₦7.2 billion easily.
Same you, in same Nigeria, with a different vision and patience.
This is how money multiplies quietly.
Let me show you.
Quite funny how as you grow older and become more layered, you begin to realize how few people can truly meet you across all your dimensions. And how adult life quietly discourages trying. Social and romantic rules nudge you toward narrower, neater boxes.
I have this friend-turned-stranger I haven’t spoken to in a long time. But it still doesn’t feel real. Their voice lives in my internal dialogue. You know how some people stay so alive in you that the idea you haven’t spoken to them feels absurd?
I found this video really helpful. Teaches how you can sell any idea. But also how you can pitch and structure your content to always capture interest👇
A strong sign that someone has a more incisive intellect than you do, is in their ability to generate ideas or ask great questions you couldn’t have come up with. A really good question is a partial discovery. Any (smart) person can understand or criticize after the fact.
One of the most difficult but liberating things you’ll have to learn is that you can only solve your problems by solving them. You can’t sleep them away, drink them away, sex them away or shut your eyes away from them. You’ll have to face them head-on, one way or the other.
My friends bought 34 acres of Ohio wilderness.
While hiking one day, they stumbled upon a dark, dripping cavern—and decided to pour their life savings into it.
Today, it's one of the world's most profitable airbnbs. The waitlist is years long.
Here's the story...🧵
Your entire life will change once you start prioritizing alignment. It doesn't matter how long you've known someone. If they no longer align with you, let them go. Give them space to figure out what they want and where they are going. Choosing alignment over history is self-care.
YOU NEED BIGGER PROBLEMS
Here's a question for you. Would you rather queue for fuel for three hours or brainstorm on a new jet propulsion engine?
If you live in Africa, you've experienced fuel queues at Christmas. Winding lines. The police Hilux that always goes straight to the front. The guys at the side of the road peddling adulterated petrol in jerrycans. And the station attendants drunk on power as they control access to the gate. It's a typical chaotic scene on the continent.
But you willingly queue for your family. Your kids need uninterrupted light this season. The weather has been crazy and everyone's grumpy because of the heat.
Now, cast your mind to an alternative world.
You're spending the same three hours in an air-conditioned co-working space with your team.
You're a venture funded startup, and your colleagues are bad-ass programmers, physicists and mathematicians. You're currently participating in the XPRIZE and excited by the prospect of winning. Even if your team doesn't win, your work will be on the world stage and open up new opportunities.
So, back to my original question. Would you rather queue for fuel or work on a groundbreaking idea?
It's the same three hours spent solving problems. But while one problem drains you, the other energises you.
In 2025, you will not run away from problems. But, you will work on bigger and better quality problems.
Your time will not be spent debating whether you should dig a borehole or well in your compound. Or if you should spend money on a pre-paid meter that ought to be free. You will no longer debate the sanity & character of your leaders or the "anyhowness" of institutions.
Instead, you will be obsessed with growing your business, spending more time with your family, increasing your influence and broadening your impact.
In your new season, you will only go where you are wanted and appreciated. Your relationships will be enriching and your friends will match your energy.
In 2025, you will remember that your brain was created for wonders and your heart was designed to be very kind. Nothing will stop you from attaining your potential, because unusual doors will open for you.
At the end of the year, you will have shown the world what it's like when brilliance meets hard work and good intentions.
As we celebrate a New Year, I wish you a fantastic one. I am rooting for you.
#WakingThoughts
Probably the most important foundational paper in finance & it’s less than 20 pages. No reason not to have read it if you’re interested in the field.
If you want to improve your business writing, read The Economist regularly for two years. Don't miss an issue.
You will become more logical and structured in your thinking, and you will regain the attention span that social media stole from you.
Your capacity to consume large quantities of information and to analyze that data will grow.
I recommend The Economist if you're training young Lawyers or Consultants.
If you're in the Tech or Creative space, in addition, I recommend Fast Company. For Finance, add Fortune Magazine.
Blogs are fine. But you need the discipline of reading very long articles. A magazine also has different sections. It forces you to read things you would ordinarily not be interested in; thereby broadening your knowledge base.
The thing is, if you cannot read seemingly boring things and prefer to only do things that feel good, your competence may be impacted.
Media is about wiring. You have no original thoughts. You just think you do. Everything you consume shapes you.
Social media, TV, music, books and gaming have turned you into this person that you are. They're not purely entertainment. They've moulded your thoughts, desires, ideologies and reasoning. You must rewire your brain by taking a break from what you're used to and consuming other things.
For a week, take a fast from the usual tech-based media you consume, and read a physical book instead. Go out to lunch with someone and leave your phone in your bag or car.
Assess the state of your emotions and thinking after a week. You may be surprised.
