Hindi tayo balat-sibuyas. We are no strangers to political attacks, and we welcome fair and genuine criticism. Hindi tayo mananatili sa halos tatlong dekada kung mahina ang loob natin. But there is a clear line between political satire and outright discrimination.

When political attacks stoop to mocking the appearance and physical condition of persons with disabilities, especially a stroke survivor, we draw that line. This is the reason why RA 7277 or the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons protects PWDs from vilification, ridicule and discrimination.

Political caricature is one thing, ridiculing a person’s disability is another. There is a world of difference between the two, and no amount of political disagreement justifies crossing that line.

This is no longer just about Akbayan Rep. Perci Cendaña. This is for every person with a disability who has been mocked, discriminated against, or treated with cruelty because of how they look or the condition they live with. We make a stand for them.
