#SaariahoLoin was enjoyable to listen to. It successfully combines traditional operatic themes with modernist practices. The spectral qualities are fitting to the storm being depicted. #MUS365
#GubaidulinaRejoice is a good example of spectral music. The simple themes that are developed contribute to the atmosphere throughout the piece. #MUS365
#PartAntiphons seems to shed most of the complexity accumulated in composition over the centuries. The homophonic quality of the voice provides a familiar, cohesive timbre. #MUS365
The sound masses created by tight baroque canons in #SchnittkeConcerto create a modern phasing effect that is very jarring. Harpsichord nicely emphasizes the baroque feeling of the duet passages. #MUS365
#ShengSeasons is a great fusion of Chinese and Western traditions. The baroque techniques imposed over a pentatonic scale are enjoyable to listen to. #MUS365
It’s disorienting how #LigetiVertige uses different permutations of a chromatic scale in conjunction with changes of register and dynamic. The melody is reminiscent of Schoenberg. #MUS365
It’s exciting to listen how #AdamsMachine transforms. It slowly allows more complex rhythms and articulations, until finally developing something that resembles a melody (in the tuba and bassoons, strangely). #MUS365
It’s impressive to see the culmination of Steve Reich’s minimalist techniques in #ReichTehillim. He cleverly uses the incessant asymmetric meter to disguise phasing in the vocals. #MUS365
#DaughertyElvis’s ability to create grooves gives the piece and immense amount of energy. Plenty of double tonguing for everyone. Virtuosic bassoon makes this piece that much more impressive. #MUS365
#CrumbAngels expands on the sounds string instruments can make including amplification and unconventional bowing techniques. Crumb depicts the devil well with chaotic and eerie strokes in the lead part. #MUS365
An iconic musical, in West Side Story, Bernstein makes use of the many popular genres of the time. The swinging, tritone-based melody in #BernsteinCool is incredibly catchy and energetic. #MUS365
#GillespieAnthropology exhibits the mastery Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker had on their respective instruments. The fast-paced bebop style makes the chart exciting and energetic. #MUS365
#PendereckiHiroshima invokes uncomfortable thoughts, reminding us of the horrors of ours race’s past. The graphic notation used is well designed to convey the sounds Penderecki desired. #MUS365
#CageSonatas gives the piano an overtly percussive role. All of the various timbres produced give the piece an exotic feel. It’s like an avant garde “Trashin’ the Camp” from Tarzan. #MUS365
The “stream of consciousness” effect in #CageChanges is incredibly diverse. Cage’s use of chance gives his music expands his composition past human psychology and completely into the realm of numbers and probability #MUS365
#FeldmanProjection has strayed past my comprehension. This piece seems like it could be extremely enriching to the performer, with the ability to freely interpret the outline of the piece, but the effect is lost on me as a listener. #MUS365
#BerioSequenza explores nearly every conceivable sound that can be produced by voice. I was amazed at how expressive voice could be without using conventional sounds. #MUS365
