@stephensackur I agree with the sentiment but it's easy to criticise a cut without suggesting what the specific alternative should be. What do you propose instead?
@faisalislam There has also been a huge overcorrection in building regulations reform as a result of Grenfell, well intentioned but totally flawed. Hence a collapse in home building in London. Government interventions have been a big net negative over the past decade on housebuilding.
@jhansonradio Ideally we have faith in experts

Failing that
75% of raised results aren't cancer.
False positive = invasive biopsy = overtreatment = incontinence & impotence
Yes there will be very sad missed cases, that doesn't mean universal testing is a net benefit
@worstall But what if the UK public want EU levels of public services for US rates of tax? And we've avoided tackling that question for 20 years by binging on debt?
@JohnHealey_MP Nice populist announcements of little significance in reality. Please please please tackle the structural issues we have that have strangled the UK's growth for the past two decade.
@dc_lawrence Encapsulates everything wrong with governing in the UK: so much focus on nice soundbites to please people, nothing tackling the root causes of issues. We need supply side reforms: make it easier to build housing, infrastructure, start businesses, drive growth. I hope it's coming.
@matthewsyed Indeed. We will only get out of this mess when we have a PM that is truly honest with voters. You cannot have European public services for the price of US taxes and generous servings of NIMBY empowerment and hostility to business.
