@teachinghamlin the issue is in the fact that not all white people (all future teachers in general) have to go through the extensive training we do...they don’t have to acknowledge their racist beliefs & they are going to teach our students of color. 🤦🏾♀️ #morethansurvive
@Okaikor and knowledgable on our craft. These are OUR students. OUR black children. It’s time to act like it! Thank you @BLoveSoulPower for an amazing book and @Okaikor for this twitter chat! #morethansurvive#NewarkTeacherProject
@Okaikor ALast: I truly believe that anyone going into the education field should have the opportunity to read this book. This book highlights the prejudice against people of color and the minuscule ways that promote racism in education. It is important as educators to be aware
@Dina89292056 Yes Dina! Black joy is what keeps the light shining on our black children! Gives them the confidence to continue finding their voice and exceed at everything in this life!
@Okaikor A3: Allies speak upon the issue and leave it as that, where as co-conspirators fight for what they believe in and make an actual effort. The distinction lies between actually making an effort and like @darianmyles said, “talking a good game”. #morethansurvive
@Okaikor A2: I agree with @DarianMyles response! Unfortunately, I have never witnessed abolitionist teaching. I think it would be beneficial for abolitionist teaching to be more present in classrooms just for the simple fact that everybody needs more awareness to the injustices occurring.
@Okaikor A1: Being in many classes where my answers were not valued. However, another classmate would say the exact same thing and get praised for it. #MoreThanSurvive
@Okaikor A0: Hey there, my name is Aicha. I am a graduate student at Montclair State University! I am grateful to be apart of the Newark Teacher program at Montclair. I can’t wait to be apart of the #MoreThanSurvive chat and see what everybody has to bring! #NewarkTeacherProject
