Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi have been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their groundbreaking discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance that prevents the immune system from harming the body.
The Nobel Prize laureates identified the immune system’s security guards, regulatory T cells, thus laying the foundation for a new field of research. The discoveries have also led to the development of potential medical treatments that are now being evaluated in clinical trials.
The hope is to be able to treat or cure autoimmune diseases, provide more effective cancer treatments and prevent serious complications after stem cell transplants.

Major organ involvement, such as ocular, vascular, and neurological issues, is often influenced by the age of onset in #Behçet’s disease (BD), with these conditions frequently observed before the age of 25.
Recent comparative studies indicate that peripheral and axial arthritis, folliculitis, and nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea are more frequent in juvenile BD. In contrast, neurological and vascular events are more common in adults. Consequently, this suggests a relatively better prognosis for the juvenile group. In parallel, juvenile BD has been found to have lower disease activity and severity scores. Reviewing various epidemiological studies, the inconsistencies in results likely stem from differences in the scope of representative data, age range, disease duration, and methodological approaches. Moreover, outcome data from studies encompassing a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds and age groups would be particularly valuable.
