The Earth has approximately 1 billion 408 million 700 thousand cubic kilometers of water and about 5.14 quadrillion tons of air.

And if you look closely, you'll see two smaller spheres hanging above the blue sphere of water. These are fresh water and atmospheric water vapor.

A jet from a starving supermassive black hole is being bent and brightened by something we cannot see.

The object is the blazar PKS 2233-148: a distant quasar whose twin plasma beams happen to point almost straight at Earth. Matter spirals toward the black hole; what the hole does not swallow is flung outward at nearly the speed of light. Those jets are among the most violent particle accelerators in the cosmos—and long-standing suspects for the origin of high-energy neutrinos, the “ghost particles” that IceCube sometimes catches after they have crossed the universe almost untouched.

Then the jet did something it should not. Radio maps and the gamma-ray light curve showed features that look like a gravitational lens: sudden brightness changes, odd course corrections, structures that appear magnified and distorted. Einstein predicted this in 1915. Normally the lens is a galaxy or a cluster sitting neatly in front of the source. Here there is no visible galaxy in the right place.

The only mass left that can do the job is a compact clump of dark matter—an unseen subhalo sitting along the line of sight, warping spacetime just enough to magnify the jet. The alignment is fleeting. As Earth, the blazar, and the dark-matter knot drift relative to one another, the lensing will fade. That is why such events are rare and why this one matters: it may be the first clear hint of dark-matter substructure caught in the act of lensing a black-hole jet.

If the same geometry also boosts the neutrino output, then blazars like this one become laboratories twice over. We get a magnifying glass on how jets launch and accelerate particles, and a possible fingerprint of the invisible scaffolding that holds galaxies together.

Silke Britzen and colleagues published the analysis in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. They are now hunting for more of these short-lived alignments. Each one is a brief coincidence: a ravenous black hole, a near-light-speed jet, and a ghost of dark matter standing in just the right spot to make both of them louder.
