A British podcaster visits Cape Town once, falls in love with the place and spontaneously buys a mansion. He then doubles the price and puts it back on the market. Some people might call it the classic capital growth that Cape Town property offers. To me, it looks like the looting of one of Cape Town's wealthiest suburbs.

The house in question is on the slopes of Table Mountain, and it exposes everything we still have not sorted out about how foreign money moves through South African property.

According to the deeds report, Steven Bartlett, the entrepreneur behind The Diary of a CEO, bought a seven-bedroom Bishopscourt estate for roughly R93.3 million in 2024. The last municipal valuation on record is for the year 2018, and the municipality valued the property at R20.3 million. That is not a typo. A municipal valuation is a rates figure, not a market price, and the roll it sits on runs years behind what buyers are actually paying.

Pam Golding Properties currently has the property listed for sale at R189 million. That is an eye-watering markup in a short space of time on a home he has, by his own team's account, barely had time to enjoy, given how often he is on a plane.

The three-level, contemporary-style home sits on an erf measuring 7 448m2, with 9.5 bathrooms and 12 parking spaces. According to the live online property listing, some of the amenities on offer include: a padel court, squash court, high-tech gym, heated rim-flow pool, plunge pool, spa room with a pedicure parlour, steam room, jacuzzi, wine cellar, poker room, and a cinema.

“A Whiter Shade of Pale” Was Already Haunting. Then Procol Harum Let Time Sing It.

There is something almost inevitable about hearing “A Whiter Shade of Pale” performed at a castle with an orchestra and choir behind it. The song has always carried the atmosphere of an old, half-remembered ceremony, and at Ledreborg Castle in Denmark in 2006, Procol Harum gave it a setting that seemed to understand the song before the first note was played.

The strange thing is that nothing about the performance feels like an attempt to make the song young again.

That would have been easy. A famous 1967 song can be turned into a museum piece very quickly, especially when the musicians performing it are revisiting one of the biggest songs of their career. Instead, Gary Brooker sings it with the weight of someone who has lived many years beyond the moment in which the song first became famous. His voice does not try to disguise time. It uses it.

And that changes the song.

The original “A Whiter Shade of Pale” had an almost dreamlike quality. The lyrics move through images that never quite settle into a straightforward story, while the famous organ part gives the song its unmistakable, almost ecclesiastical character. Keith Reid later explained that he was trying to create a mood rather than tell a conventional story, which may be one reason the song has remained so open to interpretation.

In Denmark, the orchestra makes that atmosphere enormous without destroying its mystery. Strings and voices surround the band, but the performance never feels as though the musicians are trying to explain what the song means. They leave the strange images alone. The music carries them.

That may be the secret.

Some songs become less interesting when you understand them completely. “A Whiter Shade of Pale” has survived partly because it refuses to give you a clean answer. You can listen to it at 20 and hear romance, confusion and intoxication. Listen again decades later and the same words can sound like something else entirely: memory breaking apart, a relationship disappearing, or simply the sensation of looking back at a night you can no longer fully reconstruct.

The 2006 performance makes that feeling more pronounced because time itself has entered the arrangement.

The band is no longer playing from inside the 1960s. They are looking back at it.

And there is something quietly moving about that distance. The orchestra gives the song grandeur, but Brooker gives it age. His voice reminds you that this isn't a recording trapped in 1967. It is a living song carried forward by the people who created it.

Perhaps that is why this version feels less like nostalgia and more like memory.

The past isn't being recreated.

It is being remembered by people who were actually there.
