Those of you who cannot fathom that Christopher Nolan is using trickery and a Trojan Horse approach to The Odyssey have already forgotten that Nolan made the Prestige which is all about hiding the truth in layers of deception. He made Inception which was about getting past someone’s psychological barriers to plant an idea in their unconscious. He made The Dark Knight in which Batman pretends to be a vilain so that the city can be preserved. He made Memento in which a man tricks himself into believing something.

There is nothing straightforward about Nolan’s Odyssey.

I suspected that @richardrohlin was too deep into ancient nerd lore to love Nolan’s adaptation, but of course he offers an insightful and charitable critique.

Since @jonathanpageau is too gracious to defend his initial reading vociferously, I will take up the task.

I understand why Deacon would see Nolan’s treatment of xenia as one-dimensional, however, I agree with Jonathan that if you pay attention to the details, it isn’t.

In addition to the other clear violations of the guest’s responsibility to Zeus’s Law in the film, the suitors obviously deserve what’s coming to them. Nothing about Nolan’s film makes us doubt that.
