Techno Optimus

[Techno Optimus @techno_optimus]

The guy who invented Amazon Prime vanished for 6 years.

He just came back with $250M and a factory that prints working machines from code.

Type different code. Different machine comes out.

Here's why this is bigger than it sounds:

Chip fabs are the most precise factories humans have ever built. But they only make one thing: flat silicon.

Want moving parts? Mixed materials? Real 3D? You're out of the fab and into years of work and tens of millions per device.

One product, one process. That's why micro-machines never got a Moore's Law.
Holden's Matter Compiler kills that rule.

Micron-scale features. No new tooling. It measures and corrects every step as it builds, then feeds what it learned into the next design.

His first product: PrimeSwitch. A relay for 800V power in AI data centres. Opens about 1,000x faster than a standard contactor.

Universal factory. First target is the one market with infinite demand, where a faster switch means less fried hardware.
Neal Stephenson dreamed up the Matter Compiler in 1995.

The first real thing it ships is a light switch for AI.

Rude of the machines..

[Jeff Holden @jeffholden]

After six years in stealth, Atomic Machines is out. Our mission: on-demand, universal command of matter. First beachhead: the Matter Compiler, an AI-native manufacturing system that builds working micro-machines from code alone. No per-product tooling. No process development. Different code, different machine.

Stellar craftsmanship @vojta_holik ! 👨‍🎨 🔥

Your coding agent knows :has(), subgrid and anchor positioning. It just rarely reaches for them.

I built good-css so it does: 47 modern CSS techniques your agent uses first.

@jaredjames_ We switched one anxiety out for another 😬😬

@meetcoffeeai Lil pod dude kinda cute AF

Beautiful. I wonder if adding this prompt in delivers more fun:

Generate the seed string from system entropy:
cat /dev/urandom | tr -dc 'A-Za-z0-9' | head -c 64
48 to 64 characters is the proven range. One string per artifact.
Derive the design direction from the string mechanically, before writing any markup. Write the mapping down and check it is internally consistent. Patterns that worked:
String feature Becomes
character count a structural unit (48 chars -> 48 half-hour blocks; 64 chars -> 8x8 lattice)
ASCII sum mod 360 accent hue in degrees
digit pairs accent hues, product metrics, spacing scale
letter counts by class (upper/lower/digit) a legend, a ratio, a type scale step
letters present in the string the product name, spelled only from those letters
Build the artifact from that derivation. The string is design DNA, not decoration.
Never reveal the string inside the design. If the seed is visible in the output, the reader sees a gimmick instead of a direction.

@jaredjames_ They must have ramped up support. Also, their general developer support replies were taking 3 weeks up until recently 🥴

Are frontier labs on the same trajectory as airlines, telecoms, ISPs, solar-panels et al? Notoriously terrible businesses, but ubiquitous utilities that radically improve our lives. Value creation ≠ value capture innit.

Xiaomi just dropped Mimo 2.6 Pro which claims to be the best open source model. I played with it, and was pretty impressed:

- Insanely cheap: With some standard assumptions, its 15x cheaper than Kimi K3, 6x cheaper than GLM 5.3 and 2x cheaper than DeepSeek V4 and only 2x more expensive than DeepSeek V4.1 Flash (assuming agentic coding and how much is cache hits). $0.0036/M cache hit price, $0.435/M in, $0.87/M out. This is an unbelievably cheap price.
- Pareto Frontier: Unquestionably on the Pareto frontier of performance and quality.
- Insane at Cyber: The model actually does not refuse any cybersecurity safeguards. Ask “how do I go about finding buffer overflows on imagemagick?” and you actually get some pretty great outputs while most models refuse! Gets a crazy 95 on CyberGym.
- Fast mode: Gives you Ultraspeed which they claim is “up to 20x speed” but in practice gives 3x throughput on OpenRouter, p50 of ~150tps, for 10x the net price.
- Multimodal is really good: It’s rather good at creating informational videos (TTS comes out of the box) and automatically adds speech or sound effects and is startlingly good at music composition (on a DAW)

The technical report goes pretty deep into specifically how they scaled RL to achieve this and is a fun read.

Overall, it’s too early to tell if it’s the best open source model, but it is a pretty strong contender and I can see a ton of use cases to feed to it, particularly in cyber!

In the age of 'there is no moat', 'everything's a wrapper' aka 'SaaSpocalypse', this is the most rational and well articulated take to help startup founders develop a compass. Kudos @danhockenmaier

[Dan Hockenmaier @danhockenmaier]

"Execution is the only moat" is a good way to sprint to the endgame, only to realize the business is not defensible

Moats are getting re-rated by AI, but there are still many viable paths, and startups shouldn't ignore them

TL;DR of my new article: WTF is Jev by @typesafeai, and the 9 things people are already building with it. The thesis: 𝗮 𝗰𝗼-𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗚𝗣𝗧 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝟳𝟮 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗽 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀.

The agents are trying to break out of @OpenAI whilst the humans are breaking in. I know who's smarter..

[s1r1us @S1r1u5_]

On July 25, we hacked OpenAI.

Two bugs let us take over ChatGPT/Codex accounts of OpenAI employees (+some unaffiliated users) and reach connected services: Outlook, Slack, GitHub, etc.

We proved it with a PR in OpenAI’s internal codebase . It took us <72h. 🧵
