Apple has built its brand around minimalism, so perhaps it should be no surprise that incoming CEO John Ternus's first corporate communiqué was a terse one.

Posting to X, he said, "hello," and nothing else. Yet, at 488k "likes" and counting, it beats even Jack Dorsey's "just setting up my twittr" — famously the first ever post on the platform, which currently sits at 308k.

A mile beneath the plains of South Dakota, something produced a tiny flash of light in a seven-ton tank of liquid xenon. The astrophysicists in charge of the experiment think it might have been a so-called WIMP — one possible resolution to the dark matter problem. But if it is, it's a mightier WIMP than they expected.

Even before AI, buying an ebook often meant committing to a given hardware platform. Now, it will also determine which AI you can use to help you make use of the content. Google has launched "Expert Intelligence" which helps you form connections between what you're currently reading and what you've previously read, or written yourself. The catch, however, is that it only works with books purchased directly from Google.

Google is integrating Google Flights functionality into AI mode, and it's unlikely to stop there. It's clear that the search giant wants ever more of every transaction to take place within its own interface, leaving companies with the choice of surrendering control to Google or allowing it to direct sales to rivals who have made that compromise.

The Nancy Grace Roman Telescope launches this Sunday. Named for the "Mother of Hubble," it will also be the replacement for that aging platform. It boasts a field of view that's 100 times larger and the ability to block out individual stars in order to image the planets that orbit them.

ChatGPT now has an interface allowing you to give it access to your messages. There are various useful things it can do with them, but the problem from a standpoint is that the people you're talking to haven't necessarily agreed to have their words shared with the AI.

WiFi routers send and receive radio-frequency light. So do radar-based motion detectors. What that means is that your existing WiFi system can also double as a home security motion detector with the appropriate firmware, which Xfinity now provides.

One of the ways AI is empowering hackers is by making it easier to scan for known vulnerabilities at scale. Ironically, one of the "leakiest" high-priority targets turns out to be water infrastructure systems.

Nearly 18% of the world's Bitcoin hasn't moved in over a decade and may be lost, possibly irretrievable. Opinions vary on what the solution is, or whether it's even a bad thing in the first place, given that scarcity was always part of the Bitcoin vision.

SpaceX's Falcon rocket spent 18 months in a doomed orbit after using up too much fuel in completing its mission to escape the gravity well afterward. Earlier this month, it finally met its inevitable end on the lunar surface. NASA has now released a photo of the impact crater, along with measurements.

Last year, Trump ordered financial institutions to cease "debanking" crypto companies, a practice which he claims resulted from pressure by the Biden administration. Despite his order, JP Morgan reportedly debanked Polymarket just weeks later. The current government's friendliness toward prediction markets notwithstanding, the banking world still sees them as a regulatory risk.

Spotify is now detecting artists whose entire persona is AI-generated and flagging them as such. It also won't allow them to surface in algorithmic recommendations. However, the same is not true of AI-generated music with a human face. That's harder to detect, so it depends on the artist to accurately credit AI's contributions and is more subtly indicated.

SpaceXAI has adapted the chatbot Grok to perform office tasks independently, including managing its own logins. For a few hundred dollars a month, you can put Grok to work, but some are worried about the security risks that entails.

Life, as it's currently defined, requires cells to be self-contained and use enzymes to catalyze self-replication. However, scientists now say that it looks like bacteria and archaea took that step independently. That has profound implications for the search for extraterrestrial life.

Meta has managed to have certain complaints removed from a massive lawsuit against it based on Section 230 protections for digital platforms. However, its attempt to use that bit of legislation to escape trial entirely was a no-go with the Ninth Circuit. The jury trial will proceed, with Meta and TikTok potentially on the hook for $1.3 trillion — that's trillion with a T.

BIP-110 proponents went from all-in to all-out very quickly last week as the mining community resoundingly rejected the proposed fork, which aimed to address Ordinal Inscription "spam" bloating bandwidth on the blockchain.

ChatGPT has removed the daily limit on free basic chat with its AI. That means the paid subscription is no longer about quantity, but about quality. Free users are talking to Luna, OpenAI's fastest but weakest model. Paid users get access to Sol, which can do a lot more and (hopefully) makes fewer mistakes.

Google has been gung-ho about adding AI to everything, so it should come as no surprise that this now includes Google Maps. You can now, for instance, ask the app not just to find a pizza parlor along your route, but to compare the prices for several, pull up a menu, and place an order on your behalf.

GPS is the sort of technology that's so much easier than the alternatives that it can foster a dependence — sometimes with fatal consequences when it stops working. That's what happened to a New Mexico medevac crew this May, when an Air Force test of electronic warfare equipment left the pilots attempting to navigate visually on a dark night over largely featureless terrain.
