JANE AUSTEN AND CHRISTMAS
Christmas Day December 25th
For the Austens Christmas Day would begin with Rev George Austen walking to the Church accompanied by Mrs Austen and his dutiful sons and daughters. The family might have helped to decorate the church modestly for the season.
JANE AUSTEN AND CHRISTMAS
In "EMMA" Mr Woodhouse, described by Jane Austen as a valetudinarian, "was now most nervously and apprehensively happy in this too short visit" [of his daughter Isabella & her family at Christmas]. "He thought much of the evils of the journey for her."
JANE AUSTEN AND CHRISTMAS
In the winter of 1795 Jane Austen was enjoying the admiration of several young men, including John Willing Warren, who had been a pupil at Steventon. Another was Tom Lefroy, a young Irishman who was staying with his uncle Rev George Lefroy at Ashe.
