I was “black” when I read The Odyssey in high school...

...but somehow I never imagined the characters as looking like me.

Why?

Because they were GREEK characters.

I didn’t need Odysseus to look like me to appreciate his story.

I didn’t need Helen of Troy to look like me to understand her importance.

They were Greek characters from a specific culture, with a specific history.

And this is what Hollywood keeps getting wrong.

We don’t identify with characters because they look like us.

We connect with them because we recognize something human in them - their struggles, their courage, their flaws, their values.

Odysseus is a GREEK hero.

Helen of Troy is a GREEK woman.

Their identities are part of what makes their stories meaningful.

Casting Colombians and Africans and Indians as Greek ISN'T "representation."

It’s just insulting.

Christopher Nolan took 6.5 million euros in Greek taxpayer money to film The Odyssey in Greece for 15 days.

They gave him the subsidy without telling the Greek people what the movie was actually going to be. No Greek actors. Heavy distortion of one of our most important stories.

Now the world tour is skipping Greece completely.

He knows exactly what he did. He disrespected our history, took our money, and now he won’t even show his face here.

This is what happens when Hollywood gets comfortable pissing on other people’s culture.

Christopher Nolan’s production received permission to film in Greece for 15 days with a budget of 16 million euros. The Greek state granted them 6,5 million euros as a subsidy from Greek taxpayers’ money. The Greeks were never informed about the cast of the film or the distortion of one of the most important works in our history.

Now, during the world tour, Nolan is not even returning to Greece out of respect for using The Odyssey, which is part of our Greek history and culture.

You know why? Because he knows he disrespected us. He hates us. He is racist toward the Greek people, he and his entire cast, which doesn’t include a single Greek actor.

Όταν έχεις διαβάσει Ιλιάδα και Οδύσσεια ή έστω έχεις ασχοληθεί να μάθεις ποιος είναι ο Όμηρος, πως μετά από 3000 χρόνια, ακόμα αναλύουν αυτά τα δυο έπη, δεν θα τολμούσες να κάνεις κριτική, ειδικά βασιζόμενος πάνω στην πολιτική ορθότητα.

Circe turns men into pigs, which frankly is still the most realistic female character arc in literature.

Calypso traps the hero on an island for seven years.

Cassandra can literally see the future but nobody listens, making her the first woman in recorded history to experience a meeting.

The Sirens weaponize music.

Nausicaa saves Odysseus when he washes up naked and useless.

Andromache gives one of the most devastating anti-war speeches in the Iliad.

Hecuba is basically the emotional wreckage of empire in human form.

Aphrodite starts half the problems in Western civilization by being hot and petty.

Hera is running divine opposition research.

Thetis gets Zeus involved because Achilles is having a workplace dispute.

But apart from Helen, Athena, Penelope, Circe, Calypso, Cassandra, the Sirens, Nausicaa, Andromache, Hecuba, Aphrodite, Hera, and Thetis...
