For #EYAYourArchives we explored our shelves to uncover items we hadn’t seen before. Each day brings new discoveries, from unfamiliar documents to overlooked details. Today we found an architectural submission for the 1870s design competition for Dublin South City Markets.
@talktojoeduffy I hope you’re well Joe. Just to clarify, that’s the ebook version on BorrowBox and those dates are not to be relied on. There are copies of the paperback in the system but the book is in high demand.
The Duke of Wellington, who grew up and was educated in Ireland, was buried on 18 Nov 1852, aged 83. At Queen Victoria’s request, he received a grand state funeral funded by British Parliament. Over a million watched the vast procession from Horse Guards to St Paul’s Cathedral.
As I was involved in setting up PLR in Ireland, I love seeing authors post about their earnings from library loans, even though no one is getting rich from it!
Yesterday, we bid a fond farewell and heartfelt congratulations to our Chief Fire Officer Dennis Keeley, who moves on from Dublin Fire Brigade after almost 40 years of dedicated service — and begins his next chapter as Assistant Chief Executive with Dublin City Council.
From his early days as a Firefighter on B Watch Tara Street to leading DFB through major milestones and challenges, including COVID-19, Dennis has embodied professionalism, integrity, and true leadership. His vision has driven progress in equality, diversity, innovation, and safety — leaving DFB stronger and more forward-looking than ever.
Beyond Dublin, Dennis has represented Ireland with distinction through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and as Chair of the Chief Fire Officers Association, shaping national fire service policy and development.
We thank Dennis for his immense contribution, steady leadership, and unwavering commitment to the people of Dublin.
Congratulations on your new role, Dennis — and best wishes to you and your family for the future.
It’s a quiet Trafalgar Day here in Dublin, but the Admiral has his (one) beady eye on the students and researchers in our Reading Room… @TheRestHistory@DCLAReadingRoom@dubcilib
Happy Trafalgar Day!!
What better way to celebrate than by enjoying the latest episode in our ongoing series about Lord Nelson?
Our episode on the Battle of Trafalgar itself is out next week 👀

We had a great evening last night for the launch of @janeohlmeyer's Gilbert lecture book, titled "Viragoes and Matrons: the lived experiences of women in seventeenth century Dublin". This book is full of interesting research and you can now borrow it from your library.
