"In July 2003, the African Union adopted the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, famously known as the Maputo Protocol.

This document was a turning point for women’s rights in Africa, recognizing:
1. Comprehensive rights for women
2. Gender equality in social and political spaces
3. Reproductive autonomy and freedom from harmful traditional practices.

The adoption of the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa further reinforced the continent’s commitment to these principles. For the first time, African governments were pledging not just to ratify agreements but to implement them at a national level.

At the time, we were hopeful. We believed this was a defining moment.
But here we are, 20 years after Maputo, and the question remains: Where do we stand today?
🔴 Only 42 out of 55 African countries have ratified it
🔴 Many have failed to domesticate or implement it effectively
🔴 Challenges such as weak political will, lack of funding, and cultural resistance persist.

Women and girls across Africa still face significant barriers in education, leadership, and economic participation. Harmful traditional beliefs continue to shape policies and social norms, holding women back from achieving their full potential.
Here in Nigeria, the situation is particularly alarming:
⚠️ Nigeria ranks 136th on the Global Gender Gap Index (2023).
⚠️ Nigeria has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world—accounting for 12% of all maternal deaths globally.
⚠️ Out-of-school girls in Nigeria number in the millions, the highest in West Africa and one of the highest in the world.

These are not just statistics—they represent real lives, real struggles, and real injustices.
As we reflect on 30 years since Beijing and 20 years since Maputo, we must ask ourselves:
What will history say about our generation?
Will we be remembered as the ones who let momentum slip away, or as the generation that pushed forward and made real, lasting change?"

A national strike over a local issue in Imo is not what Nigeria needs right now. The reforms are working. The Naira is responding to such reforms. Multiple banks have declared record profits. The manufacturing sector has begun to adjust, meaning that jobs will be created. To rock the boat now is not in the national interest. Let us think beyond ourselves and our allies. Nigeria must not go down because of what went down in Imo.
