Even the classic cross-quads trick fails with sorted transparency because intersecting geometry can't be sorted. It is typically done with alpha cutout, making it look pixelated and cheap.

Spiral meshes built in Houdini, everything assembled in Niagara inside Unreal Engine. Clip shows the final effect, the Houdini breakdown, each element in Niagara, then the full result.
