1996 మార్చి 5....ఆ రోజు నాకు ఇంకా గుర్తింది. ఉమ్మడి ప్రకాశం జిల్లాలో అత్యంత వెనుకబడిన పశ్చిమ ప్రాంతంలో తీవ్రమైన తాగు, సాగునీటి ఎద్దడితో ప్రజలు అల్లాడుతుంటే....వారి కష్టాలు తీర్చేందుకు 30 ఏళ్ల క్రితం తొలి అడుగువేసిన రోజు అది

ప్రకాశం, నెల్లూరు, కడప జిల్లాల్లో 4.38 లక్షల ఎకరాలకు సాగునీరు, 15 లక్షల మందికి తాగునీరు అందించాలనే లక్ష్యంతో.... శ్రీశైలం ప్రాజెక్టు జలాశయం ఫోర్‌షోర్ నుండి 43.50 టీఎంసీల నీటిని వినియోగించుకోవాలనే ఆలోచనతో.... 30 ఏళ్ల క్రితం ఇదే రోజున (1996 మార్చి 5న) ముఖ్యమంత్రిగా నేను వెలిగొండ ప్రాజెక్టుకు భూమిపూజ చేశాను.

అనేక కారణాలతో తరువాత వచ్చిన ప్రభుత్వాల నిర్లక్ష్యానికి బలైన వెలిగొండ పనులను మళ్లీ 2014-19 మధ్య వేగవంతం చేశాము. ప్రాజెక్టు కోసం నాడు రూ.1,414 కోట్లు ఖర్చు పెట్టాం. తరువాత వచ్చిన ప్రభుత్వం అరకొర పనులతో తీవ్ర నిర్లక్ష్యం చేసింది. ప్రాజెక్టు పూర్తి చేయకుండానే ప్రారంభోత్సవం అంటూ ప్రజలను మోసం చేసి నవ్వులపాలు అయ్యింది.

2024లో కూటమి ప్రభుత్వం వచ్చాక వెలిగొండ ప్రాజెక్టు పనులకు అత్యంత ప్రాధాన్యం ఇచ్చాం. రూ.140 కోట్లతో పెండింగ్ బిల్లులు క్లియర్ చేశాం. రూ.585 కోట్లు ప్రాజెక్టు నిర్మాణం పై ఖర్చు చేశాం. హెడ్ రెగ్యులేటర్‌కు సంబంధించి 2,200 క్యూబిక్ మీటర్ల కాంక్రీట్ పనులు పూర్తయ్యాయి. రూ.456 కోట్లతో ఫీడర్ కెనాల్‌ లైనింగ్, రిటైనింగ్ వాల్ పనులు వేగంగా జరుగుతున్నాయి. ఈ ఏడాది జులై నాటికి తొలి ఫేజ్ పనులు పూర్తి చేసి వెలిగొండకు కృష్ణా నీళ్లు తీసుకొస్తాం. 2027-28 నాటికి ఫేజ్-2 నిర్మాణం కూడా పూర్తి చేస్తాం.

ప్రజల దశాబ్దాల కలను నిజం చేసి...కరువు ప్రాంతంలో ప్రతీ ఎకరానికి నీళ్లిచ్చి....రైతన్నల జీవితాలు మారుస్తాం. హార్టికల్చర్ సాగుతో ప్రజల జీవన ప్రమాణాలు పెంచుతాం.

వెలిగొండకు శంకుస్థాపన చేసింది నేనే... పూర్తి చేసి నీళ్లు ఇచ్చేది నేనే అని ప్రకటిస్తున్నాను.
