I think hike failed because it tried to do too much at once. I distinctly remember hike sending SMS to each one of my parents' contacts. They started getting calls from all of them because the ones that recieved the messages didn't understand what it meant - way ahead of its time

The PM’s call for a sovereign social media app reminds me of Hike.

Once an amazing Made in India platform, Hike was a fun, youth-driven alternative to WhatsApp. Stickers in Indian languages, offline SMS, themes, private chats, news, games, and even payments. Essentially a super app before the term became popular.

At its peak it hit 100M+ users and unicorn status. Yet it failed! Perhaps unable to match WhatsApp’s simplicity and network effect, or because it tried doing too much, leading to clutter and confusion.

Still, Hike was ahead of its time and showed what was possible if we truly backed Made in India apps.
