There is no mandate to curtail legal immigration. In fact, Trump said many times during the election cycle that he would increase legal immigration. If anything, Elon and Silicon Valley execs have every right to hold him to that promise. He made the promise and we voted for him.

This is Trump’s own stated policy. Was the Silicon Valley campaign $$ the impetus behind the policy or was the policy the impetus of the SV $$ and support? Does it even matter? We all voted for it because it was a well-established policy of Trump’s even during the primaries.

People newly making their way to the right via Trump and their disillusionment with Democrats are learning that immigration is not just another policy question, but THE fundamental issue around which all politics hinges.

Questions about how to govern a nation rest on the more foundational question of what the nation is. At bottom, the nation is its people. It is not a proposition, or a set or laws and regulations, or an economic collective, or anything like that. It is a people. And immigration is the one issue that determines more than any other what constitutes OUR people, and therefore what constitutes OUR nation.

Trump won because more than anything else, from the time he came down that escalator, he understood this critical lynchpin of modern politics. It is and has always been the beating heart of his presidency. Those newly arrived to the Trump coalition would do well to internalize this. They will quickly see that immigration is not the best tool for patching short-term labor shortages (which may in fact be very real), whether it is for a factory owner in Springfield, Ohio, or a tech company in Silicon Valley. Equally bad. Equally misguided.

Labor questions are hard. I will concede that. There are a lot of of really bad incentives (mostly created by bad policy) and mismanagement of human capital that distorts where and how employers and employees can find equilibria. But immigration is not the answer even if it solves some short-term, immediate need. If Silicon Valley wants to hold up their end of the bargain on the new coalition they've joined up with, they need to get more creative than just moar moar moar H1Bs.

Eliminating DST will result in 5:00 AM sunrises during the summer. Which means the vast majority of people will lose daylight during the summer months. Retaining DST year round means more sunlight in the evenings, which is when everyone is awake to enjoy it.
