then Trump happened. then Boris. then Brazil elected a literal clown to congress.

Charlie Brooker didn’t get it wrong. he just wasn’t pessimistic enough.
but here’s what everyone missed about Waldo.

the show treated a non-human in politics as a dystopia.

what if it’s actually the solution?

not a cartoon. not a puppet. something with no ego, no dynasty, no vote bank. something that can’t be bribed because it wants nothing.

we’ve automated factories. supply chains. radiology. legal research. financial markets.

but the people governing all of this? still running on the same operating system as 1947.

the biggest unrealised productivity gain in human history isn’t in code or capital.

it’s sitting inside the world’s most inefficient industry. politics.

and if there’s one place where this inflection point hits hardest, it’s India.

1.4 billion people. governed by systems designed for a fraction of that number. bureaucratic debt that compounds every single day.

the next 25 years will write the next 200. and we’re still running governance on borrowed time.

but here’s what people get wrong about India and chaos.

chaos isn’t the obstacle. chaos is the proof of concept.

UPI didn’t wait for perfect infrastructure. Aadhaar didn’t wait for consensus. CoWIN vaccinated 2 billion doses on a homegrown stack.

India doesn’t need ideal conditions to leapfrog. it has a track record of doing exactly that.

so what actually needs to happen?

not AI replacing leaders. not algorithms writing law.

but AI owning political functions. procurement, welfare delivery, subsidy routing, compliance, red tape, grievance redressal.

the places where human discretion has historically meant human corruption.

here’s the part nobody wants to say out loud.

this only works under a government with no incentive to weaponise the very tools it’s deploying.

AI in governance in the wrong hands isn’t reform. it’s surveillance with better UX.

the prerequisite for digital democracy is a government that’s afraid of concentrations of power. including its own.

i’m not saying AI should replace leaders.

not yet.

but every function that can be made transparent, automated and auditable, should be.

because the alternative isn’t the status quo. the alternative is Waldo. and Waldo, as Brooker eventually showed us, ends in a police state.

in 2013, Black Mirror warned us about a world where people were so disgusted with politics they’d vote for a cartoon.

in 2025, people aren’t even disgusted anymore. they’re just numb.
the window to fix this is open. it will not stay open.

India of all places knows what it means to miss a generational window.
