RUMOR WATCH: COULD ELON MUSK’S X BE NEXT IN THE PHILIPPINES?

After the government’s recent pressure on Meta, Discord and Reddit to establish stronger local accountability, attention could eventually turn to other major platforms operating in the Philippines, including X, owned by Elon Musk.

There is no official order right now requiring X to secure a Philippine franchise, and I found no credible report saying Elon Musk or X has already been formally summoned over this. But the possibility is not far-fetched.

House Bill 4786, the proposed Social Media Platform Franchise Act, is written broadly to cover social media platforms as public services that would need a congressional franchise before operating in the country. The bill is still pending in the House Committee on Economic Affairs.

DICT Secretary Henry Aguda has also publicly supported requiring major social-media companies to secure legislative franchises and maintain a stronger Philippine presence so they can be held accountable under local law. So far, most of the public pressure has focused on Meta, while the CICC has separately required Discord and Reddit to provide local representatives.

So the rumor goes:
Meta first.
Discord and Reddit next.

Could X eventually be asked the same question?

If HB 4786 ever becomes law, the issue may no longer be about one company. Large foreign platforms operating in the Philippines could face the same basic requirement:
If you want access to millions of Filipino users, establish a local presence, follow Philippine law, and become directly accountable here.
For now, though, “Elon Musk and X are next” is speculation, not an announced government action.

FLASH REPORT: DISCORD BAN LIFTED IN THE PHILIPPINES

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has lifted its ban order against Discord following a meeting with the platform’s management on compliance matters. CICC Executive Director Undersecretary Renato “Aboy” Paraiso confirmed that the agency is ordering the lifting of the restriction.

The meeting covered the CICC’s requirements and Discord’s existing teen-safety measures. Discord also presented its Global Teen Experience, which is designed to place younger users in age-appropriate spaces and includes age-verification measures.

The CICC had earlier required Discord to establish a Philippine presence and provide a local point of contact to improve coordination with authorities.

Discord access in the Philippines is now being restored following the lifting order.

Discord community reaction about the discord ban. This is not all about Nigerians because I have some Nigerian frens but yes there are a lot of Nigerians on telegram that tried to scam me too. I tried defending the Filipinos tho about scams.
