Brandi Waller-Pace speaking about racial discomfort to a room full of mostly white music educators. On inclusion: "to include is to bring Others in. Let's start with why other their Others in the first place." So powerful. @Decolonizemusic@ILMEA1#IMEC22

@dr_s_bertrand @CGrove_Music The thing that matters most about this book is the focus on definitions. His attention to describing systems of oppression from different lenses is a wonderful example of Freire’s “naming the world”. If nothing else Kendi models critically examining what is taken for granted.
@weis_mrs@AleshaAngsten @CFMelecio @dr_s_bertrand Super! I think you are saying something that more people want to say. School culture has a way of intimidating/guilting educators to get right into the curriculum. Check out proactive circles through Restorative Practices https://t.co/cxlt4bXIKv #TCHEdBirds
@KileySpecht @dr_s_bertrand I love this idea! There is such an emphasis on one way of being “successful” in school. Nodding a really encourages rethinking! I wonder if the focus on grades and GPA at all is the greatest disservice.
@CFMelecio @dr_s_bertrand Some good stuff in White Fragility. Unveiling whiteness to white people is tricky. But once people can get past the discomfort true liberation is possible. DiAngelo has received some push back that's worth unpacking but the idea that whiteness is a thing is important.
A3 1/5: I’m looking forward to continuing the work of refining the practices of critical pedagogy, especially w/ a trauma-informed, anti-oppression lens. I have learned so much over the years and have dipped my toes in this work but…#TCHEdBirds
A3 4/5 Ultimately, I believe that providing an equitable environment has less to do with specific lessons & activities & more to do with the teacher’s attitudes & philosophies around why equity & diversity matter in the first place. #TCHEdBirds
@dr_s_bertrand My pleasure! There is so much out there. It can be hard to find places to start. I enjoying searching to filter out the noise for others.
A2: I have an addiction to resources & zero organization for collecting & distributing them. Here are a few off the top of my head. They/re pretty general & deal with rethinking the structures of schools rather than specific classroom practices. #TCHEdBirds
