🇬🇷 is completing the first phase of its humanitarian assistance to Lebanon 🇱🇧.
Consistent with its role as a pillar of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, Greece stands firmly alongside the Lebanese Government and people, responding to the UN Flash Appeal with concrete action.
Through Hellenic Aid, 🇬🇷 MFA Greece has:
• Contributed €300,000 to the Lebanon Humanitarian Fund of United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs
• Allocated €500,000 via World Health Organization to support Lebanon’s healthcare system
• Delivered 3 tons of humanitarian aid in 🇱🇧, in coordination with the 🇬🇷 Ministry of National Defense.
Greece reaffirms its steadfast commitment to Lebanon’s stability, sovereignty, and resilience, and to advancing coordinated international humanitarian action.

All surveillance alerts were quickly investigate, & there were no major disease outbreaks during the seven weeks of escalation in 🇱🇧with large-scale displacement.

In the first two weeks of April, there were 55 attacks on healthcare, which resulted in 46 deaths and 101 injuries among health workers, and the destruction of 44 ambulances.

Healthcare personnel, facilities, and ambulances must be protected from violent acts at all times.

.@WHO is calling for urgent support for health systems affected by the conflict in the Middle East across 5 countries – Lebanon, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, the Syrian Arab Republic and Jordan.

Hostilities have caused mass displacement (over 4 million) and rising casualties (3300 killed and 30,000 injured).

This appeal will support:

Across the Middle East, health needs are outpacing available resources.

Health systems are absorbing rising trauma caseloads while trying to sustain essential services under severe operational constraints, including disrupted supply chains, overstretched facilities, and increasing risks of disease outbreaks.

@WHO has launched a US$30.3M appeal to sustain trauma and critical care, maintain essential health services, strengthen early warning and outbreak response, and secure the supply chains needed to keep care running in the most affected countries.

Without additional support, service disruptions will deepen and more lives will be lost to conditions that can be prevented or treated.

Yesterday in Lebanon, @UN Resident Coordinator @Imran_Riza and WHO Representative @abdinasirgole visited Rafik Hariri University Hospital and Al Zahraa Hospital, as well as the national Public Health Emergency Operations Centre.

At Rafik Hariri, one of the largest public hospitals in the country, capacity has expanded from 90 to 180 beds during this crisis, and the hospital is managing more than 40 war-wounded patients. Intensive care units are full, with some critically ill patients treated in emergency areas. Dialysis demand has surged from 160 to 264 patients, with machines running up to four shifts a day, while supplies are down to about one month. Those displaced from the South, Bekaa and Beirut’s southern suburbs are among the many additional patients who have overwhelmed the hospital.

At Al Zahraa Hospital, more than 2,200 emergency cases were received in one week, with hospital occupancy reaching 95%. Deliveries have nearly doubled, premature births are increasing, and more cancer and dialysis patients, many displaced, are seeking care.

Across both hospitals, health workers, many displaced themselves, continue to deliver care under sustained pressure.

@WHO and partners, with support from @EU_ECHO, have delivered essential supplies, including for trauma care and dialysis. More supplies are currently on the way by land convoy from our logistics hub in Dubai, supported by @DubaiHumanitarian.

WHO remains committed to supporting @mophleb and #Lebanon’s health response. But greater international support is urgently needed, together with immediate steps to de-escalate the hostilities and ensure that health care is protected at all times.
