China quietly restarted official military talks with Canada on Sept 4, its first Defense Coordination Dialogue since April 2018. Beijing announced it while silence out of Ottawa.

Apparently this was a working-level meeting in Canada and both sides talked regional issues and “practical exchanges.” No names were released by either government, but I do wonder if Dominic Barton was involved.

This meeting certainly fits the broader Carney-era thaw with Beijing while Canada-U.S. relations stay strained. Don’t forget that Carney’s retaliatory U.S. tariffs kick in tomorrow.
