On Apr. 30, 1966, the second XB-70 prototype, Air Vehicle 2 (AV 2), suffered a short circuit in the landing gear retraction system shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base.

As a result of this malfunction, the nose gear was blown back into the partially retracted gear well door, and the tires were slashed.

The malfunction caused hydraulic pressure to remain on three of the four main wheel brakes which, being locked when the XB-70 landed at 173 knots hours later, led to the burn-up of the Valkyrie's main landing gear tires.

Hannah White was sitting on a Delta flight in Dallas, desperate to get home to North Dakota after doctors said her mom didn’t have much time left. She was supposed to connect in Minneapolis, but a mechanical issue kept the plane at the gate. Minutes turned into an hour, and a flight attendant finally knelt by her seat and gently explained that she’d been rebooked for the next day. Hannah says she started sobbing on the spot, realizing she might miss the chance to say goodbye. The flight attendant apologized and cried with her as Hannah thought, “I might not see my mom one last time.”

That’s when the crew decided to act. That is when the crew stepped in. The Delta captain you see in the photo, Captain Keith Napolitano, called and asked for a short hold on the connecting flight. Operations and the gate team approved it and coordinated the details. The crew moved Hannah to first class so she could get off the plane as soon as they parked, and the captain made an announcement asking everyone to let one passenger deplane first because she was trying to reach a loved one. The man seated next to Hannah pulled up a map of Minneapolis–St. Paul on his phone, showed her the fastest route to the next gate, and told her to run the moment the door opened. When she finally reached her connecting flight, she was met by smiling Delta crew members and passengers who already knew what she was going through and were eager to help her get settled and on her way.

Hannah landed in North Dakota that night and made it to the hospital in time. Her mom passed away the next day, but the delay, the captain’s call, the flight attendant’s compassion, a stranger’s help and a second crew ready to look out for her gave her one more full day by her side. Later, Hannah wrote that Delta’s kindness gave her “twenty four extra hours” with her mom and called it “the gift of time.” The crew has since been identified as flight attendant Eva Ortiz and Captain Keith Napolitano, and Delta has issued a statement offering condolences and thanking Hannah for trusting them with such an important trip.
