Three years after Advent acquired Maxar for $6.4B, @fikocian and I took a deep dive into its transformation into @vantortech, one of the most prominent Earth observation companies.
We take a deeper look at what happened after the deal, whether the divestments helped, how the company has transformed beyond satellite imagery and what the future looks like.
Filip reached out to me first and put in a lot of work to get this in motion and is the finance brain behind this piece, and as always, I am the strategy guy.
It's a pretty long, in-depth analysis of a very interesting company - so a perfect weekend read for anyone interested in space tech, geospatial or private equity!
We are excited to welcome some leading players in the Energy & Infrastructure sector who will be participating in the EO Summit 2026 in London on June 22.

I wrote the original piece - "Orbital Data Centres Are Really an EO Business (For Now)" so some quick thoughts:
This article just restates the "for now" position I had written about with a somewhat different framing.
The competitive landscape and AI infrastructure points are real, but they describe the long-term trajectory - not where the early commercial opportunity is.
Several alternative markets are named in the article (and I agree there is real potential there) but overall, it basically agrees that the real near-term contract pipeline is with the EO market.
So, I am sticking to my position for now, until I see a non-EO commercial pipeline of comparable contract maturity.
PS. Yes, the Anthropic-SpaceX deal is real - but the contracted part is purely terrestrial infrastructure, with the orbital as an expression of interest for the future.
Pretty stoked that EOSummit 2026 is taking place at one of London's most historic venues - The Brewery - a 250-year-old building that was producing millions of pints of the city's most beloved beer until not too long ago.
So, while you will be networking and listening to the applications of satellite data across insurance, agriculture, energy, environment and defense, you'll be standing exactly where King George III and Queen Charlotte once stood, and where all that beer was once made.

Parametric insurance is one of the clearest commercial use cases of Earth observation.
It already uses EO-based data such as soil moisture, flood extent, burn severity, sea surface temperature, wind, irradiance - and that list just keeps getting longer with every new sensor/satellite launched. Very EO use cases map this directly from sensing capability to product line.
If you are interested in the intersection of EO and parametric insurance, then the latest @terrawatchspace deep-dive is for you.
We are excited to welcome some leading players in the Insurance & Risk sector who will be participating in the EO Summit 2026 in London on June 22.
☂️ Liberty Mutual Insurance, Swiss Re, dClimate Labs and EarthDaily will be speaking in the EO for Parametric Insurance session
🛡️ Guy Carpenter, Oxford Sustainable Finance Group, Inigo and ICEYE will be speaking in the EO for Physical Climate Risk session
Register for @EOSummitConf and hear about the applications of satellite data for insurance and finance!
📢 Call for Lighting Talks at EO Summit
We are looking to showcase new innovations in Earth observation during this session - not a startup competition or sales pitches, but genuinely new ideas with a clear answer to "what is new, for what, and what does it change?"
We will have 8 x 6-minute talks - we are looking for both originality and variety (not all about foundation models or edge computing).
If you have an exciting new EO or EO-related innovation to present, please fill in this form: https://t.co/Yo0ZR37lbD
Deadline: Sunday, May 17 | 11:59 pm CEST
At the @EOSummitConf in London on June 22, Angelika Gremska and Stefan Józefowicz from @Bayer will be presenting case studies of Earth observation in agriculture, along with the value of remote sensing in crop intelligence and the challenges in geospatial adoption.
Register for EO Summit and hear directly from the people using satellite data for agriculture applications.
