@amandarivkin A return in essence to pre-2009 system, with France in the NATO Political Committee but not in the Military Committee. There was lots of military cooperation between France and other NATO countries. Marine Le Pen’s trying to be De Gaulle…
@TheEuropeansHQ For saie of precision, what Travaglio, a disreputable character in my view, is saying here here is that, were Putin faced with Poland, the Baltic states, and Germany “armed to the teeth” he could be justified in seeing them as a threat. It’s the usual “poor Vlad, evil West” stuff
@peterboghossian I believe the AfD leader is a gay woman. In the US we are convinced certain identities automatically intersect, e.g. Lgbtq, racial minority, Democrat. Euros seem less inclined now to think in such intersectional terms.
@DavidAFrench@ProfHansNoel Gazillionaires are totally insulated from any consequences of what they say and do. No consequences for disrespecting the truth, so truth is no longer a relevant standard for Bezos. It’s different for us poor schmucks who might get in trouble for not telling the truth.
@SenBillCassidy This clearly seems like too little too late to a lot of people. But I’m happy to welcome allies without recrimination. There is a fight on to preserve democracy in our country and beat back the staggering corruption that is gripping us. Look ahead and fight together.
@greggnunziata@JohnJHarwood And Marco Rubio knows better than this. He’s no better than others who’ve had their consciences removed in pursuit of power. Rubio should not be allowed recycle himself. But he will try.
@EdwardGLuce@georgemagnus1 Lower-case liberal democracy is often poorly understood. In my country (the US) the term “liberal “ is widely used as a synonym for “progressive” which is incorrect and implies the sort of massively welfare-statist, intrusive government that is alien to classical liberals.
@anders_aslund The firings are largely irrelevant. Trump has a terrified Republican majority in the Senate that will rubber-stamp whomever he nominates, and the replacements will not be improvements.
@slantchev Europeans have reached the conclusion that the US is an unreliable ally and that, broadly speaking, they need to be able to take care of themselves. The details and political will are tricky at this point. Trump has blown up NATO as we have known it.
@EdwardGLuce@marcthiessen I commented to Mr. Thiessen that I found it odd he had “helped bring” countries into NATO without understanding what NATO was.
