He taught sixth-grade language arts at Rhodes Middle School on San Antonio’s West Side—one of Texas’s poorest ZIP codes. Colleagues and his principal said he connected with hard-to-reach students; some who had never finished a book learned to love reading, and even kids with serious behavior issues stayed in line in his class.
That experience drove him into policy. He earned a master’s in education policy from Harvard, was elected to the Texas House in 2018 at age 29, and has served eight years. He has focused on public education, children’s welfare, health-care access, child care, prescription-drug costs, and juvenile justice. Texas Monthly named him one of its Ten Best Legislators in 2021. Key bills include a $25 insulin copay cap, allowing incarcerated minors to earn high-school diplomas, and a statewide pre-K class-size cap.
A native Texan with eight generations of Texas roots, he was raised by a single mother in Round Rock. His grandfather was a Baptist preacher in South Texas; Talarico still attends the Presbyterian church where he was baptized and is studying at a Presbyterian seminary to become a pastor. His Christian faith motivates his service—lowering child-care and drug costs, funding schools, reforming justice—while he strongly supports separation of church and state.
