A top Prosperity Party cadre (Daniel Kibret) is openly spilling the beans on Haile Selassie. In one of his most revealing speeches last week, he talked too much and inadvertently told the world that Haile Selassie was a usurper who did not deserve to rule #Ethiopia. He said:

“Let me mention a well-known figure about whom many songs were written. His name is Ligabaw Beyene. He was Menelik’s trustee, and when Menelik passed away, he gave his word regarding who would succeed him. Later, when Lij Iyasu was removed from power and Ras Teferi rose to prominence, Ligabaw Beyene objected. He refused to accept it and sided with those who opposed Ras Teferi’s ascent to power. As a result, there was significant conflict between him and Ras Teferi. He was punished for his stance, flogged by Ras Teferi, exiled to Koysha, and suffered greatly.”

Education in Eritrea: Context and Clarity

"... Education was designated, in the post-independence period - a central pillar of Eritrea’s development strategy and made free of charge from the primary through the tertiary level. Efforts since independence have focused on rebuilding and expanding an educational system inherited in a severely depleted state. Hundreds of schools, learning centres, and libraries have been constructed or rehabilitated across both urban and rural areas. The number of schools has increased from just over 500 in 1991 to more than 2,300 today, while enrolment has risen from approximately 340,000 in the late 1990s to nearly 700,000 at present. Technical and vocational education has likewise expanded as part of a broader effort to diversify educational pathways and respond to labour-market needs".

"...Today, six colleges provide tertiary education across distinct academic and professional fields, including medicine and health sciences, education, engineering, business and economics, agriculture, and marine sciences. While these institutions initially focused on diploma and undergraduate (BA/BSc) programs to address urgent national skills gaps, they have progressively expanded their academic scope. Several colleges now offer advanced postgraduate coursework, higher professional certifications, and master’s-level programs in selected disciplines, reflecting both growing institutional capacity and evolving national needs".

President Isaias Afwerki met, at Al Yamamah Palace in Riyadh in the mid-afternoon hours today, Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Salman for extensive talks on bilateral ties as well as other matters of vital interest to both countries.

The warm discussions focused on the historical and brotherly ties between the two countries and prospects and opportunities for broadening their bilateral ties of economic cooperation.

On regional issues, the exchange of views revolved around current developments in the Nile Basin, the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. The two sides deliberated on Saudi Arabia's appropriate role in all these regional matters.

President Isaias remarked on the absence of active Saudi role in these affairs in the past stressing the pivotal requirement of enduring regional peace as a pre-requisite for vibrant economic development.

In this regard, President Isaias urged for significant contributions of Saudi Arabia in the promotion of peace and stability in the wider region in general and in our neighbourhood in particular.

Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, for his part, stated that he will shortly send a delegation to Eritrea for more profound consultations on all these vital regional issues.

President Isaias Afwerki met, in the late afternoon hours today at the Denden Guest House, Mr. Guang Cong, the new UN Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa.

In the extensive discussions which focused on developments in the Horn of Africa, President Isaias noted that UN role and track-record in the resolution of conflicts in the region has not been effective and will require a new approach.

In this respect, President Isaias underlined that mere deployment of Peace-Keeping forces without rigorous accountability modalities and holistic underlying frameworks could not indeed bear the desired results. But the blame cannot be attributed to the UN as the problem essentially stems from the prevailing flawed international order, President Isaias stressed.

President Isaias also referred to the shortcomings of regional organizations whose efficacy have been compromised - despite the lofty objectives enshrined in their mandates - due to unwarranted external interventions. In most cases, the regional organizations have become vehicles for external agendas.

On the situation in Sudan, President Isaias emphasized the historical ties and partnership that bind together the two countries. In this spirit, Eritrea had submitted, in 2022, a concept paper on the establishment of a popular governance structure based on citizenship in its sincere efforts for a modest contribution for the restoration of peace and stability in Sudan. But the initiative could not make much headway due to external interventions which have only exacerbated the conflict.

In a brief statement to the Eritrean News Agency, the UN Special Envoy stated that his visit to Eritrea is part and parcel of his engagement in the region. Mr. Guang Cong further expressed his satisfaction in the fruitful discussions that he held with President Isaias Afwerki; paid tribute to Eritrea's contributions in the resolution of conflicts in the region; and affirmed his full readiness to work with Eritrea for the promotion of regional peace and stability.

The bilateral relationship is important also in terms of its regional dimensions and ramifications. Our areas of cooperation are not limited to bilateral matters alone; we also discussed the region and the wider neighborhood, as well as the issues affecting Africa and the broader region.  Our shared strategic vision focuses on how to emerge from the quagmire of marginalization, external interventions, instability, and wars, and to contribute to creating a conducive environment to address these challenges.

"Our discussions covered detailed aspects of current issues and the prevailing situation, so that we can renew our commitment, develop joint plans, and engage others in order to include all stakeholders in the region. We emphasized raising strategic awareness, clarifying goals, and utilizing available resources — a process that requires continuous effort. The political culture we are instilling in our bilateral and strategic relations is of great importance, because the goals are long-term and the challenges are significant. The task accordingly demands coordination between regional objectives and the global context".

Red Sea security concerns are the responsibility of nations with direct coastal access, including Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Egypt, Sudan, and Eritrea.

The Council emphasized that while Ethiopia's economic aspiration are valid, they DO NOT intersect with the GCC’s maritime security framework.

Eritrea and Egypt share a historic, strategic, and symbiotic partnership rooted in mutual security, economic cooperation, and geopolitical understanding. Their alignment is not only natural but essential for the stability of the Red Sea and the wider region.

Today, as Ethiopia and certain regional actors—encouraged and financed by UAE-backed interests—pursue destabilizing ventures in Sudan, it’s clear that the ultimate targets extend beyond Sudan itself. These actions threaten to undermine the strategic balance that safeguards both Eritrea and Egypt, effectively striking at their back door.

This is why the Eritrea–Egypt relationship carries profound regional importance. I also hope to see Yemen play a constructive role in restoring equilibrium across the Red Sea corridor.
