The far-right did not gather to riot in Liverpool from other places in the country. Though the city has a strong anti-fascist tradition, they are from Liverpool. Until we admit we have a far-right influence in this city, the quicker we can accept we have an issue
The “socialist city” stuff about Liverpool has always been confused. Is there a strong left tradition? Yes, but Labour arrived later here than other Northern industrial cities, and was locked out of power by the strength of working-class Orangeism for many years.
In terms of popular consciousness, Liverpool is rabidly anti-Tory - absolutely no doubt. But there’s a heavy dose of populist, anti-establishment conspiratorialism, often pushed by locally based internet mini-celebs selling CBD, and Sine Missione “cosmic scallies” talking about chemtrails and anti-vax stuff. These guys have far bigger reach than any leftwing politician. There is Tommy Robinson-type nationalism but also a more weird, inchoate, Pizzagate-adjacent, “Save our Kids”-type rage against decline and supposed tears in the social fabric. It’s definitely fertile ground for the far right, even though I’d hesitate to describe the crowds on County last night as political - that would do them too much justice. I’d say Liverpool’s “political” mindset is built on a vague anti-elitism rather than any specific socialist consciousness, and that is certainly compatible with everyday racism.
Also important to note that active left politics here has always had a distinctly Old Left, workerist flavour. That’s not to say the local left/labour movement isn’t anti-racist, but it’s certainly not fully congruent with, say, the Rainbow Coalition-type politics that has come from the New Left & the tradition of the GLC etc.
🧵 I don’t think many of the media or people on platforms like this understand quite what @Keir_Starmer has done. Parliamentary democracy is designed to have a number of safeguards to stop party leaders behaving as despots: one of those is limits of the use of the whip. (1/9)
following news labour govt will increase raids throughout summer these from @AntiRaids are vital. get yourself tooled up, tell your friends and your community. join your local anti raids network. when we come out in numbers and resist, we win.
There have been 4 pro-Gaza Independent candidates elected so far. The same number as Reform MPs. That's big and totally unexpected. It deserves coverage and analysis.
It's why I think youth work generally - and youth theatre specifically - is so important.
When you are a teenager you really need spaces where you feel like you belong. Sometimes that's something you organise yourself - but that's hard, and risky, and often doesn't work.
Liverpool’s celebrated local museums pay so poorly that its workers go home to cold homes and empty cupboards. It’s no wonder they have gone on strike to demand the better wages they deserve.

The Post office was ordered to pay nearly £60 million in compensation to 555 victims
But astronomical legal costs meant that hundreds of sub-postmasters still remain out of pocket and a lot have died before receiving justice.
