We all want to be optimistic about Evansville’s future, but glossy speeches can't rewrite cold, hard math.

The recent State of the City address painted a beautiful picture of "Building What Matters," but it completely left out the massive financial hole being dug right beneath our feet.

If you want the real, unvarnished truth before diving into the **2027 Evansville Budget Survey**, you need to look at the official filings and State Board of Accounts (SBOA) disclosures:

📊 Skyrocketing Costs, Shrinking Population: In just three short years (2022 to 2025), city personnel costs exploded by **50.1%** ($114.1M to $171.3M), and benefit obligations surged **88.3%**.

Meanwhile, Evansville *lost* 2,726 residents. Fewer people are carrying a massive, permanent overhead.

💨 The Federal Cushion is Evaporating: The city has already drained **$44.4 million** (nearly 78%) of its temporary federal ARPA cash cushion. That money is gone by December, and the city actually ran a **deficit in FY2025**, spending more than it collected. The allocations are being redirected for socialist programs, activism agendas and aiding and abetting illegals aliens; all in the name of diversity, equity and inclusion.

A Massive Debt Shadow: Between recorded city debt and federally mandated sewer updates, Evansville is staring down roughly **$1.6 billion** in obligations. To put that in perspective, that is **11.5 times** the size of our entire annual General Fund budget ($140.2 million).

🪜 The "Terry Tax Ladder" Cycle: The strategy is becoming predictable: expand the spending, run a shortfall, raid the reserves, and hit the taxpayers with things like the new **$20 wheel tax**—which only covers a measly 18% of our actual road repair needs anyway.

While local families and small businesses are cutting their personal budgets just to keep the lights on, city leadership continues to expand government size.

The state approved an estimated **$80 million annual revenue increase** for CenterPoint Energy. The administration highlighted a $5 million community energy fund as an achievement. Let’s do the real math on that: a $5 million band-aid against $80 million in recurring annual hikes means ratepayers get exactly **6.25 cents of "relief" for every single new dollar** CenterPoint extracts from our pockets. That isn't relief; it's a talking point.

Worse, leadership is already openly discussing "new sustainable revenue" paths down the road—which is municipal code for potentially tapping into county public safety or municipal income taxes up to 1.2% by 2028. Now you know why the city administration hijacked the EMS services.

🧾 Why This Matters for the 2027 Budget 🧾

Our official poverty rate stands at **18.6%**—which is 51% higher than the Indiana state average. True economic recovery doesn't come from growing administrative infrastructure or masking imbalances with volatile casino money (which is down 30.7% anyway). It comes from living within our means, practicing fiscal stewardship, and protecting the working families, independent contractors, and small businesses who actually power this community.

As the city shapes the 2027 budget, we don't need performative optimism. We need genuine accountability, real utility pushback, and an honest look at the ledger 🔍

It is incredibly dangerous when those unaccustomed to building their own financial independence, gets access to the checkbook. It’s akin to a lottery winner that files bankruptcy after a few years of decadence.
