Korea was one people until 1945. Today the men of the South stand up to three inches taller than the men of the North.

Same ancestry, same language, the same height at the start. The border is 160 miles long and 2.5 miles wide.

In the North, food comes through the state ration. Rice when there is rice, maize when there is not, and meat on a few holidays a year. In 2012 the army cut its minimum height for a recruit to 4ft 8in, because too few 17 year olds could reach the old one.

In the South, meat consumption rose about tenfold in 50 years. Beef, pork, eggs and milk went from luxuries to every day.

South Korean women gained 8 inches in height over the 20th century. It is the largest increase recorded for any population on earth.

Children who escape from the North are visibly smaller than Southern children of the same age. Fed in the South, the young ones catch up. The older ones are too late.

Nobody designed the experiment. But it has 75 million subjects, a genetic control and a hard border, and it has run for 80 years.

One side of the wire was fed grain by a government, and the other side ate meat.

At the Prayer Vigil with the young people of France, they reenact the incredible history of the Church of France, from the arrival of Lazarus and his sister Mary Magdalene, the martyrdom of St. Denis, the baptism of Clovis, the purchase of the Crown of Thorns of Our Lord by St. Louis IX, St. Joan of Arc, the countless Saints of the eldest daughter of the Church, the martyrs of the French Revolution, all the way to the great St. Thérèse of Lisieux.

Human dignity must remain at the heart of our digital future.

During his address at @UNESCO, Pope Leo XIV reflected on the challenges posed by artificial intelligence, calling for technology to remain at the service of people and for greater protection of children and young people in the digital age.

While artificial intelligence can process and correlate vast amounts of information, it cannot provide meaning or trust. In the words of @Pontifex , “Meaning is the oxygen of the mind.”

His message ultimately went beyond technology: trust, dialogue and education are essential to overcoming divisions, strengthening our common humanity and building lasting peace.

During his flight to France this morning, just hours after Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen’s beatification, Pope Leo XIV recalled watching Sheen’s television program with his family.

The Pope described it as a way they spent time together while receiving the truths of the faith through Sheen’s lively teaching. He said he was happy to approve Sheen’s beatification and revealed that many people wrote to ask why he had not attended the ceremony.

When a reporter suggested he could attend Sheen’s canonization, Pope Leo smiled and replied: “There we go!”

South Korea has decided to increase the number of 3,000t Korea Coast Guard patrol vessels deployed in the Yellow Sea from 11 to 17 by 2030.

The expansion is aimed at strengthening its response to illegal foreign fishing vessels. Rather than primarily replacing aging vessels, six additional ships will be built to expand the fleet.

The latest 3,000t patrol vessels actually displace around 3,840t and use a combined diesel-electric propulsion system, improving fuel efficiency during low-speed patrols.
