@BarrySchust Eddie Murphy said that Andy Taylor was the benevolent dictator of Mayberry, NC., a town in which, glory be, there were no blacks. "Only Opie escaped," he said. Not so. Helen & Andy eventually moved away with him. My choice? *Star Trek* TOS. A thousand worlds to visit.
@edwards21228 How odd it is that some songs on this list became famous to this day (Cooke's, Checker's, The Drifters', Elvis's, The Ventures'), while the others did not. I confessed to liking "It's Now or Never"("O Sole Mio") when I lived in NOLA. My friends laughed at me.
@FreelanceOwl In 1984, Illinois had a primitive computer system, but we still had to use the card files to find many items. What joy it was to find and read *any book I wanted* from the stacks or the departmental libraries. I knew I was blessed then, and I still know it now.
@HoorayBacon As I interpret the dictionary definitions of both words, "disdain" is less pejorative than "contempt." Use "disdain" when you wish to convey upper-class snobbery. Save "contempt" for genuine revulsion at an idea or a person.
@DannyDeraney I believe Mr. Bemis had to suffer just so Meredith could say his wonderful last lines: "That's not fair. . . that's not fair at all." After a lifetime of being put upon, what else could he say? And a reminder: nobody wins a nuclear war, not even Mr. Bemis.
@DADiClementi Topo was delightful; just a gentle, sweet character. We kids learned how to be sweet ourselves partly by watching and listening to him. How long was he on per appearance? 5 or 10 minutes at the most? That's all it takes if the example is vivid enough.
@ElChandler Every writer feels that way. Write the story first; politics comes later thru your bias. GOT was a *fractured fairy tale.* Try subverting the idea the other way: a good man or woman achieves power & tries to hold it. Not so easy to stay good, but many people do--at a cost.
@Cloudnme I don't smoke or do hallucinogenic drugs. I drink an after-hours cocktail about once a week and enjoy it. I'm retired now, but my lifestyle hasn't changed. My diet has plenty of fish, vegetables (mostly broccoli), and pasta. I get my rest, and I am happy most of the time.
@SeanTPendergast I had the same feeling. *Something* is fundamentally wrong w/ HOU's practices and its game prep if, after April OTAs, training camp, and three reg. season games, the team still looks as disorganized & ineffectual on the OL as this one does. Very, very bad results.
