$MVIS Sub-$200 #Lidar Could Reshuffle Auto Sensor Economics.
MicroVision, a solid-state sensor technology company located in Redmond, Wash., says it has designed a solid-state automotive lidar sensor intended to reach production pricing below US $200. That’s less than half of typical prices now, and it’s not even the full extent of the company’s ambition. The company says its longer-term goal is $100 per unit. MicroVision’s claim, which, if realized, would place lidar within reach of advanced driver-assistance systems (#ADAS) rather than limiting it to high-end autonomous vehicle programs. Lidar’s limited market penetration comes down to one issue: cost.
“We are focused on delivering automotive-grade lidar that can actually be deployed at scale,” says MicroVision CEO Glen DeVos. “That means designing for cost, manufacturability, and integration from the start—not treating price as an afterthought.”

Industrial ADAS: Beyond automotive, there is a significant push into Industrial ADAS, particularly for forklifts. By lowering sensor costs, MicroVision aims to tap into a market where 30,000 annual forklift accidents in the US create over $100,000 in costs per incident.
Market Challenges and Consolidation
The acquisition is part of a broader trend of industry consolidation, which Glenn believes is necessary for the LiDAR market to mature.
LiDAR Adoption: High burn rates and slower-than-expected OEM adoption (as seen with Mercedes-Benz and Volvo) contributed to Luminar's financial struggles.

$MVIS On a call with automotive and trucking journalists Feb. 2, DeVos said there were three good reasons to do the deal.
One, it “accelerates MicroVision’s commercial path to revenue,” he said, noting Luminar has an existing customer base, relationships MicroVision will now manage. Second, DeVos said Luminar’s product line fits well within MicroVision’s own portfolio.
And finally, DeVos said the acquisition gives the company a global pool of talent.
“They have a great talent base we can combine now with MicroVision’s, so it’s a really nice fit from a talent and capabilities standpoint,” he said.
The deal was done in a week and now the integration work begins. Luminar will be folded into MicroVision’s business.
“Now it’s on to integration and really the top priority for us is re-establishing and engaging those customer relationships,” DeVos said. “When a company is going into a bankruptcy process, that can put some strain on customer relationships. Our focus is on re-establishing those relationships with MicroVision. I’m very confident we can repair those relationships where they need to be repaired or build on relationships that are still very good.”

$MVIS The testing phase of the 8 different LiDAR sensors concluded in November 2024. The data was analyzed using the DIN SAE 91471 specification, a specification that defines how LiDAR sensors should be evaluated in the automotive industry through key performance indicators (KPIs). The results were presented to all members of the consortium in a final online workshop on 18th February 2025.
The project has helped to provide insight into the LiDAR sensor performance and specifically limitations when subjected to adverse conditions.
