@KEdge23 I disagree but I really hope the Tories commit to abolishing it as I don’t want them to win the next election.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@ChrisFi65328659 Great. almost 50p per person. And then no one half decent will ever want to do it so our MPs will get even worse than they already are.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@AndyRejoinEU @rocourt62 Yep, great, let’s do the sums. There are 650 MPs. There are 800,000-1.2 million pensioners in need of social care. If you half every MP’s salary, you’ll generate around £30 a year for each of those pensioners- maybe two or three hours of care.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@ChrisFi65328659 @doctorcol And your solution is to permanently accept that they aren’t doing their jobs, have crap government forever and thus save a tiny bit of money?

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@AstroMikeMerri @NeilDotObrien That doesn’t sound like a very good third possibility.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@NeilDotObrien They’re not planning to fix it, they’re just planning to give the rich a massive break from it altogether. Your criticism is entirely valid but it makes the case for some sort of taper mechanism.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@AstroMikeMerri @NeilDotObrien There are two logical possibilities here: some people need more time so the maximum time allocated for the exam should be greater. No one needs any extra time so no one gets extra time.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@AstroMikeMerri @NeilDotObrien So why not just give everyone that amount of time if they need it?

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@savehalfmoonpub @FreedomMatty If he was a non-dom then presumably we’re not losing very much in tax revenue when he goes.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@ItaloMVit @JeanDarc815 @Sargon_of_Akkad Last time I checked, ancestry DNA tests don’t attempt to define Englishness.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@ItaloMVit @JeanDarc815 @Sargon_of_Akkad Do you think DNA defines Englishness?

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@_fugol @MichaelMoore381 @Fongenschler @Sargon_of_Akkad @grok If this topic genuinely interests you, there is some really interesting academic research out there: David Hinton, Nicholas Higham and Barbara Yorke for example. It’s well worth learning about for real, rather than just using LLMs to argue about it with strangers on X.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@_fugol @MichaelMoore381 @Fongenschler @Sargon_of_Akkad @grok “Any LLM”. Ffs.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@_fugol @MichaelMoore381 @Fongenschler @Sargon_of_Akkad @grok I’m not getting to an argument with Grok about medieval history.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@MichaelMoore381 @_fugol @Fongenschler @Sargon_of_Akkad Quality. You’re implying that scientists have an Anglo-Saxonness test and that these are the results.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@MichaelMoore381 @_fugol @Fongenschler @Sargon_of_Akkad Utter nonsense. There’s no evidence for widespread population replacement by continental settlers in the early medieval era and even less that such a replacement still causes major regional differences in people’s DNA in 2026.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@olivebranchud @JeanDarc815 @Sargon_of_Akkad If they were born in England and grew up here then they aren’t Spaniards and Croats.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@_fugol @Fongenschler @Sargon_of_Akkad All of that is equally true of most people from Scotland and Wales, as well as many Americans, Australians etc. There is not an “English race”. There is a place called England and its people, each of which created and continues to create the other.

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@leerogg @baylissbaghdad

[Howard @Tfajeu]

@olivebranchud @JeanDarc815 @Sargon_of_Akkad Correct, because they’re not from England.
