Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi Press Briefing on 06 July 2025:
The Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) was established by an IMC of Ministers from:
- The Police (Bheki Cele)
- State Security (Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba)
- Defence & Military Veterans (Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula)
- Justice & Correctional Services (Michael Masutha)
...in July 2018, as directed by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
From July 2018 until March 2025, their work achieved:
- Investigated 612 case dockets
- 436 suspects arrested & charged
156 firearms recovered (with 55 of them linked to political killings cases)
- 35 members of the SAPS arrested (including 1 linked along with an MP with the killing of Sindiso Magaqa)
- 128 accused found guilty in 106 cases (with 29 accused given life imprisonment)
On 26 March 2025, 121 dockets under investigation were removed from the PKTT as directed by National Deputy Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Shadrack Sibiya, acting on instruction of Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu.
Without consultation with the National Police Commissioner, Gen. Fannie Masemola or the KZN Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt. Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
5 of the dockets had instructions for arrests, but these were halted as the dockets sat in Sibiya's archives in Pretoria.
Lt. Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi sent 10 members of the PKTT in 2024 to assist an Organized Crime Unit controlled in Gauteng and operating throughout SA and in neighbouring countries.
This decision to send the KZN guys there was the beginning of the cause for the disbandment of this Organized Crime Unit.
This unit was looking to dismantle a criminal syndicate that involves:
- Politicians sitting in parliament
- Members of the SAPS
- Members of the Metro Police
- Members of Correctional Services
- Prosecutors in Gauteng
- The Judiciary...
...all controlled by a drug cartel & business people in Gauteng.
