THE INVISIBLE RIVALRY: HOW THAI MEN ACTUALLY SEE FARANGS

A Western man walks down Beach Road holding hands with a Thai girl and naturally assumes the local men are glaring at him with quiet jealousy. He thinks he is a predator who just entered the local ecosystem and stole the best women from the dating pool, leaving the native men with fewer options.

It is a massive, ego-boosting illusion. The truth is, they are not even swimming in the same pool.

To understand how Thai men view the "farang invasion," you have to completely separate the country into two distinct demographics: the educated middle-class men of Bangkok, and the provincial men of Isan.

For a 30-year-old Thai middle-management office worker in Bangkok, the farang dating a girl from a Pattaya Soi is not a rival. He is an alien participating in a completely different sport. The Bangkok manager is looking for a girl from a good family, with a university degree, pale skin, and a stable corporate job. When he looks at the girls working in the nightlife industry, he does not see a potential wife. He might see a fun Friday night distraction, but he would never, under any circumstances, bring her home to introduce to his mother.

Normal, mentally stable, middle-class Thai men do not go to the red-light districts to find serious relationships. If a girl from this background somehow manages to hide her past and infiltrate the life of a "normal" Thai man, it literally becomes the plot of a dramatic Thai soap opera (lakorn). The secret always comes out, the family throws a massive scandal, and it ends in disaster. Thai society is brutally class-conscious. Farangs simply bypass this class system because they are entirely blind to it.

The only time Thai men experience genuine, profound emotion regarding farang dating choices is absolute confusion over beauty standards.

In the Thai social matrix, pale, white skin is the ultimate biological currency. It signifies wealth, high social class, Chinese-Thai heritage, and a bloodline that has never had to do manual labor in the brutal tropical sun. Darker skin is historically associated with rice farming, the provinces, and poverty.

When a wealthy foreign man arrives, Thai men expect him to leverage his money to get the absolute top-tier local beauty—a pale, delicate, university-educated girl. Instead, they watch the farang actively bypass the local beauty standard to pursue a dark-skinned, heavily tattooed girl from a poor farming village.

To a Thai man, this is completely baffling. It is like watching a billionaire walk into a luxury car dealership and aggressively demand to buy a rugged, sun-beaten pickup truck. They simply do not understand the Western fetishization of the "exotic, tanned island girl." For Isan men, the standard is slightly adjusted due to regional demographics, but the core rule remains: lighter is always considered better.

But there is one final, rarely discussed psychological layer to this dynamic: the reverse exoticism.

While Western men sit in bars dreaming of submissive Asian women, it is an open secret that almost every Thai man secretly harbors a fantasy of trying a farang woman. They consume the same Hollywood movies, global media, and internet culture as the rest of the world. The fascination with blonde hair, blue eyes, and Western features exists heavily in the minds of Thai men. The only difference is the global economic disparity, which makes it incredibly difficult for an average Thai man to "buy" into the Western dating pool.

Ultimately, the farang in Pattaya thinks he is a wolf stealing sheep from the local flock. The reality is that the local men are standing in a completely different field, watching the wolf eat grass, and wondering why he has such terrible taste in food.

The United States used about 8 major air bases in Thailand during the Vietnam War (roughly 1961–1976).

The most commonly listed ones are:
* Don Muang (near Bangkok) – Until around 1970
* Korat (Nakhon Ratchasima)
* Takhli (Nakhon Sawan)
* Udorn (Udon Thani)
* Ubon (Ubon Ratchathani)
* Nakhon Phanom
* U-Tapao – Major B-52 base
* Nam Phong (Khon Kaen)

At the peak (around 1968–1969), roughly 45,000–50,000 U.S. personnel were in Thailand, with the large majority being Air Force.

About 80% of U.S. air strikes against North Vietnam were flown from these Thai bases.

All combat forces were withdrawn by mid-1976 at the request of the Thai government.

Even today, there are quite a lot of joint exercises and other stuff going on between the two countries in Thailand...

And the largest diaspora of Thai people around the world are actually in the United States...

~ 110,000 Australia

Also it turns out that US Citizens are the only country in the world that can own 100% of a Thai Limited Liability company. The original Treaty of Amity and Commerce was signed in 1833 (the first treaty the United States signed with any Asian country) and updated several times, the last being 1966 during the time of all of these bases in the Vietnam war era.

Thailand is a formal U.S. treaty ally (since 1954) and a Major Non-NATO Ally.

The USS Abraham Lincoln (Nimitz-class aircraft carrier) is scheduled to dock in Thailand next week (late August / early September 2026) for rest and recreation (R&R).

Thailand and the USA have at least one major exercise almost every few months. Cobra Gold is the flagship event and happens once a year (last year 2025, this year 2026).

Besides all of that, and outside of exercises very few US military personnel are in Thailand - perhaps less than 100 at any given time.

I never knew all this stuff until I got curious today and looked up the history of all of it.

Curiosity is interesting. I love both countries.

US aircraft carrier expected in Thailand after record deployment sparks concern over crew conditions

The US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is expected to visit Thailand in early September after spending more than 250 consecutive days at sea during a deployment linked to the war with Iran, USA Today reported.

Crew members told relatives about the planned stop, although the US Navy declined to confirm the visit, citing operational security. The carrier departed San Diego in November 2025 for an expected six-month deployment but has remained deployed for more than nine months, with its only previous port call in Guam in December.

The extended deployment has prompted concerns over conditions aboard the vessel, which carries approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines. Fifteen US senators demanded answers from Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth over reports of food and water shortages, broken plumbing, exhaustion and mental health crises, including allegations that multiple sailors attempted to go overboard.

Hegseth dismissed reports of deteriorating conditions as misrepresented, while President Donald Trump angered military families by saying the deployment was not nearly long enough. The carrier began heading home after the USS George Washington arrived in the Arabian Sea to replace it.
