Still tired from all the work I did as an intern doctor at @MulagoReferral hence all the new cohort of medical interns should be paid their allowance

❝ We are advocating for fair deployment, ensuring that all medical interns are deployed. The allocated 35 billion is sufficient to facilitate all interns for at least 8 months. Let everyone work for that period.❞
Mirembe Joel, Secretary General of @TheUMAofficial
❝ After that, additional 18.5 billion shillings can be requested through a supplementary budget as required. We must remember that these pre-medical interns are not students but fully trained professionals, many of whom have families.❞

WATCH: A group of undeployed medical interns threaten to storm @Parliament_Ug sitting during their planned regional plenary sessions slated on August 28-30 in Gulu City, Northern Uganda.
"We are coming to Gulu if you don't pass a supplementary budget to deploy us. We have been to all the top offices in this country, such as; the president's, Speaker's, @MinofHealthUG's, among others but there's no sign of deploying us."
According to the General Duties minister in the Ministry of Health, Ms Hanifa Kawooya, the ministry received Shs35b, which she says is not enough to deploy all medical interns and pay them, adding that the available money can only cater for 1,500 interns out of 2,700 eligible degree holders who need an internship. The ministry says it costs Shs1.3 million per month, or Shs15.6 million annually, to deploy one intern. The ministry wants to deploy the 2023 cohorts and leave out the 2024 cohort.

@DaisyKatooko@Jacobeyeru The Minister of health is working around the clock to have medical interns deployed, our advocacy is for a sustainable system that will halt this back and forth gap in mandatory deployments as these.

Together with the Federation for Uganda Medical Interns, we are holding a press conference to urge the @MinofHealthUG and the Government of Uganda to address the plight of medical interns, which have significant implications for the public health system. Year after year, trained medical graduates face numerous challenges, ranging from delayed pay to insufficient pay and now to delayed or selective deployment.
According to the Ministry of Health, over 1,500 medical interns have not been deployed, primarily due to insufficient funding. The government allocated 35 billion shillings for allowances for over 1,200 medical interns expected to be deployed by the Ministry of Health in the coming months. However, a budget shortfall of 18.5 billion shillings has hindered the deployment of the remaining interns.
The failure to deploy all qualified medical interns is not only a disservice to them but also poses a significant threat to the health of many Ugandans who rely on their services.

As the population continues to grow, healthcare demands expand, and the staffing gap widens, it is imperative that the government takes immediate action to deploy all medical interns and ensure a steady supply of skilled healthcare professionals.

Despite the Ministry of Health's promise to deploy interns, only 50% have been granted internships, leaving many frustrated and demotivated.

You sleep for a few hours and wake up in Uganda with no where to start, as we fight to #StopCorruption a full committee sat and served themselves per diem only to come out and not all interns have been deployed, some of whom have been waiting for 2 years now, and yet apparently the money was budgeted for and enough to deploy all the medical interns, how exactly do you people want to run Uganda? #StopAbuseOfPowerUg #March2Parliament #DeployAllInterns

The @MinofHealthUG is trying to clear backlog, they say.
In 2022 without backlog, they sent 1,600 interns
In 2023, they sent 1900 interns
In 2024 however, with a 'backlog' they have deployed 1200 interns. Is this still an issue of clearing backlog ???
