IIRC, SEGA US tried to make it into a franchise with a SegaCD port (that had an awful ost) and a couple spin-offs, but SEGA Japan supposedly killed any talks of an actual sequel in favor of pushing Virtua Fighter (which is the better game, but there was room for both).
With all this Eternal Champions news, I wanted to share this bit of fan art I did a while back of RAX. EC was one of those games that got too in the weeds with worldbuilding and ended up better for it.

agreed with the comments here, but it's not just the realism, it's also that the level design is less abstracted. quake level design is an abstract representation of the world, what made Duke Nukem 3D pop (and all the games after) was the levels were of "real places"
