A Myanmar military strike hit a market in Kyauktaw, Rakhine State, on 28 September 2026. The toll rose to 50.
The Arakan Army holds the town. A jet struck around noon. The target area was the busy market by the Kissapanadi Bridge, where trucks offload goods from India. Aid worker Wai Hun Aung and the Arakan Army both put the dead at 50 and the wounded at 58 after rescuers pulled more bodies on 29 September. Women and children were among them. Stalls, vehicles and nearby structures burned.
The Arakan Army said the military hit a civilian market on purpose. A local aid worker said the spot sits far from the fighting. Reuters said a junta spokesman did not answer. The military has said across Rakhine that it is going after Arakan Army fighters.
This is one of the deadliest single air hits on civilians in that state this year. A hospital strike in December killed at least 30.
Families are still looking through the wreckage. Some bodies were burned past easy identification. The final count may move.

**Over 70,000 Civilians Held as Human Shields in Maungdaw Rescued by AA**
**AB News - August 14, 2024**
It has been reported that the Arakan Army (AA) successfully rescued over 70,000 civilians trapped as human shields by junta forces and allied armed militants in various neighborhoods of Maungdaw, a border town in Rakhine State.
The rescue operation has been ongoing since August 7, and civilians from different ethnic backgrounds, including Rakhine, Muslim, and Hindu, have been freed.
"We never thought we would survive. We couldn't even leave our homes. We were afraid of the junta forces and the armed militants. At that time, we were like water in their hands. It was only yesterday that the AA soldiers rescued us, and we are so grateful to be alive," said Ko Maung Maung Naing from Aung Myae Bodhi Ward, speaking to AB News.
The AA reportedly transported the rescued Rakhine, Muslim, and Hindu civilians by boat and trucks to safer areas.
Since fighting erupted in Rakhine on November 13, 2023, the junta forces blocked land and water routes and kept the townspeople of Maungdaw trapped as human shields, according to the locals.
The junta had armed Muslim militants, who led the violent killings of civilians and looted properties, said U Raju, a Hindu man who had been trapped in Ward 4.
"Armed teenage Muslim militants were the scariest. They would arrest and beat older men, kick them, and kill them. Some were taken away and haven’t been released yet. When we reported to the junta, they told us it wasn’t their concern and directed us to the Muslim militants. We were left without help or protection," he explained.
In Maungdaw, the junta restricted Rakhine and Hindu people’s movement and access to food supplies, said U Abukar from Ward 5.
"The junta freely allowed the allied Muslim militants to move around and buy goods. When the Muslims bought rice, it cost 6,000 kyats per basket, but for Rakhine and Hindus, it was as high as 15,000 kyats per basket," he stated.
At present, the AA has taken control of nearly the entire town of Maungdaw, and the AA is actively fighting against the remaining junta forces stationed at the military base in Myo Thugyi, known as NaKaKa 5.
