@tshugart3@cdrsalamander My Dad was involved with submarine design & construction. He put in his preference for Pearl, but the last 20-some years of his career was alternating duty at MINSY and NAVSEA Arlington.
X-59 goes supersonic 💨
On June 5, NASA's quiet supersonic research aircraft, the experimental X-59, went supersonic for the first time. It reached a top speed of Mach 1.1 during its 81-minute flight.
@grAntlerMensch Both FIFA and FIA have become self-serving organizations, intent on maximizing their profits at the expense of teams and fans.
As.things now stand, I have no desire to attend either a soccer match or an F1 race.
@Toadster 30 years ago I invested in a Nissan thermos bottle. $40 spent back then has saved me thousands that would have been spent on mediocre coffee.
Sadly, I haven't found a way to reduce the beer expenditures...
@kejamieson_ I've had an Australian bush style hat for +40 years. It's been all over the world, including Australia, Malaysia, Germany, and the US. It now looks a bit crumpled, but I still wear it every day to pick up the mail. Definitely a comforting friend.
@USN_Submariner Before Mare Island was closed, there was a Wahoo St. up near the BOQ. The "new" (1960s) housing area had many streets named after ships built at the yard. All gone now :(.
@ValerieInsinna But just like most parents, our leaders appreciate pretty pictures of their dependents. This transcends culture and politics.
(See pics of troops in starched camo uniforms. Looks great but an infrared nightmare).
@KeraRolsen Paying off the mortgage is a pleasant and freeing experience. It is a worthwhile goal.
I'm old, and once again have a mortgage, but no worries; that's for my heirs to deal with (in 20-30 years, hopefully).
@cdrsalamander European museums were a revelation - very few items roped off, or in glass cases. I could examine an object as closely as I liked, as long as I didn't touch it. (TBH: our folks taught us to only look, not touch).
@ValerieInsinna Chicago hot dogs.
(Back in the 1960s, the father of a friend was stationed at Patuxtent NAS. Whenever he flew a plane to the West Coast, it got loaded up with Maryland crabs. His friends were always happy to see him)
@USN_Submariner Reach back further in history - the Tennessee-class BBs were also steam turbine -electric drive. Just swap the burning dinosaurs out for the hot rock.
