Taproot, a long-awaited upgrade to bitcoin, became active on Sunday at block 709,632.

Taproot will implement what is known as Schnorr signatures, which will make bitcoin transactions more private, efficient, and affordable.

This is bitcoin's first major upgrade since 2017.
