Within a few hundred metres in Dublin 1 there are 4 huge short term living schemes (3 private student & 1 co-living). Once all are open there will be 1,500+ apts & not a single permanent home in an area desperate for permanent homes.
This is to become yet another hotel, right opposite the Aloft Hotel, so tourists staying in the Liberties will be able to look out their bedroom windows at other tourists looking out their bedroom windows across the street …

Great article from Una Mullally describing how the neglected Dublin 1 area is being transformed for the worse by luxury student apts, co-living apts & hotels. We need more public & affordable homes in the area, not gated, communities hostile to working class communities.
@Jeanette_Lowe@kieranarose They could well put up gates as has been the norm in other developments. People from the community of John Street & Summer Street seem to be under the impression that the permeability aspect wasn’t happening.
@davemcc82@kieranarose It is & the extortionate cost of these studios was recently brought up in the dáil. In other capital cities this style of corporate led luxury accommodation has had a very negative impact on working class communities in the long-term.
@kieranarose Crikey🥴! A fair bit of “I’m alright Jack” off this hot take, pretty tone deaf considering the cost ( €2,495 per month for a studio) in the middle of a housing crisis.
“This is.. financially efficient: build, sell, recycle the money, go again. You don’t need gazillions of international euro to build housing for sale” @IrishTimes
1.3m households in England are on local authority housing waiting lists, the highest figure since 2014. About 164,000 children live in temporary accommodation.

@kieranarose Similar Co-Living apartments across Dublin are being rented out as short-term rentals at extortionate rates in the middle of a housing crisis, if an accessible access point is all the community is being offered we must be considered a very cheap date
@theLibertiesSOS@otrosnosotros The SHD process has negatively impacted the south & north inner city Dublin. There are huge concentrations of short term accommodation in parts of the city creating lifeless & unwelcoming areas. Reckless planners have contributed to the decline of the city.
@Seamusdo To be honest if we hand over precious public space to foreign investment funds to manage we will end up in this continual cycle of confusion & uncertainty - public space should be public space. This feels very much like something else.
@kodomonster@Seamusdo@Pidge@darragh_mor@JenCumminsTD@lesleybyrne I think it is very hit and miss about when the gate is open and the problem is nobody knows about it. Many locals don’t and we were on a tour of the Poddle recently and the guide wasn’t aware of access here. Public / Not public 🙁
There is something so sadistic about a society & a ruling class that can justify- & even delight- in the cruelty against children. This child was catapulted onto a neighbiring rooftop from the impact of Israeli bombardment. This is lustful violence of the worst kind. Sick.

In previous eras, the summary execution of 15 rescuers might’ve been the crime that turns global opinion against the war, but we live in an age of total barbarism, in which the “civilized” West and its proxies don’t bat an eye to even the most heinous massacres.
@davemcc82 Luxury Build To Rent David, like Newmarket Yards across the way, which still has a lot of rooms to fill by the looks of it, extortionate rents
