A real pleasure to join so many friends and familiar faces including @gsjosan, @_JasvirSingh, @theParamSingh, @kiran_k_m, @AmarjitJammu, @NeenaBromsgrove.
In my keynote remarks I reflected on three themes:
1️⃣ The ancient office of the High Sheriff — representing His Majesty The King within the justice system across courts, prisons, probation, law enforcement and emergency services — and its continued relevance in modern Britain nearly 1,000 years after the first Sheriff of London and Middlesex.
2️⃣ Growing up above my parents’ shop in Hackney in the 1980s and how faith, resilience, education and service helped shape my outlook on life and public service.
3️⃣ The spirit of Vaisakhi and seva — the quiet, selfless service that strengthens communities and helps hold London together.
One of the highlights of the evening was presenting a High Sheriff’s Special Recognition Award to Gopaljeet Singh Bhachu:
“In recognition of his long and exceptional voluntary service to the community. Gopaljeet has given many years of quiet, dedicated service through interfaith, civic, charitable and Sikh community work, helping to build understanding, trust and friendship across communities. As Chair of Harrow Interfaith, Founder and Chair of Harrow Sikh Association, Vice Chair of the London Resilience Faith and Belief Sector Panel, and Ambassador and Advisor to City Sikhs, he has been a bridge-builder between people of different faiths and backgrounds, reflecting the values of service, compassion and care for all.
“His contribution is also seen in his role as Chair of Trustees at Bereavement Care, which provides free and confidential support to individuals and families in Harrow, Hillingdon and surrounding communities. In 2024, his interfaith work was recognised internationally when he was invited to an interreligious conference at Castel Gandolfo on the theme ‘One Human Family’, where he met His Holiness the Pope at the Vatican. This award honours Gopaljeet’s exceptional service, humility and lasting contribution to community cohesion, interfaith understanding and compassionate support for those in need.”
Thank you to all involved in organising such a thoughtful and well-attended evening.

This is so awesome.
The Sikh regiments played an oversized role in the Imperial Army for centuries.
It was Sikh regiments who relieved the Canadian Army at the Second Battle of Ypres.
A proud martial tradition which many Sikhs continue in the @CanadianArmy today.
@RemigrationNow_ Britain’s success is built on talent. 1 in 3 UK tech founders, 20% of NHS staff, and 40% of doctors come from diverse backgrounds. ‘Remigration’ of these citizens would cripple Britain faster than any war or recession.

India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives.
