@ElysianFields_0 I wish Nolan had picked up on Menelaus as the closest thing to an Everyman, not Odysseus. He just wants justice; he’s the one who feels guilt about the war; he’s not particularly powerful (Iliad bk 7) but he’s just he’s all all-around good guy and Homer uses him so well.

@thhouseofblack There’s also the idea that because a work is old we *cant* know what the original intent was—“it’s been passed down so long we can’t be sure”—so it’s an interpretive free-for-all and nothing matters. Similar to a lot of casual Bible discourse.

This is the stupidest take I've seen going around. The Odyssey is mythology – even by your fiction logic it is historical fiction set in a particular time and culture. It isn't a faithful adaptation when you literally erase Ancient Greece from the tale.

I just got done watching it and it's exactly what you think

A nolan film trying to do a modern version of The Odyssey

Good soundtrack, shot great, acting across the board is meh (besides Robert Pattinson), a few good scenes and a third act that ties it together

Unfortunately the "moderness" is what makes this film drag down. Im not feeling like im watcing the odyssey but more so watching a bunch of Americans do what they think the odyssey is. The random races of people, the outfits, the accents, the dialouge. All of it takes you from the film and boils it down to just another Nolan film. Plus he didnt do himself any favors making Elliot Page such a important character to the story. That also just takes you out

It's a 6/10 and I doubt it'll have the longevity of his other films.

@NolanAnalyst One of the worst things about this movie is that it has a tone and vibe way closer to the Iliad so he can’t have any of the fun of Odyssey. Big miss
