On this day in history, July 17, 1996, TWA 800 exploded at approximately 8:31 p.m. EDT, twelve minutes after takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The Boeing 747-100 exploded and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near East Moriches, New York, United States.

All 230 people on board were killed in the crash; it is the third-deadliest aviation accident in U.S. history.

The investigation concluded that the probable cause of the accident was the explosion of flammable fuel vapors in the center fuel tank. Although it could not be determined with certainty, the likely ignition source was a short circuit.

MH17: Worst airliner shootdown in history was 12 years ago

July 17 2014: Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, a B-777, is shot down over Hirabve (Ukraine). All 298 aboard die. A criminal inquiry stated the jet was hit by a SAM missile fired from an area controlled by Pro-Russian Rebels.

The investigation was led by the Dutch authorities – over two-thirds of the passengers were from that country - who concluded that the missile system was traced to a Russian brigade that later returned to the country in the aftermath, as confirmed by earlier independent enquiries.

In 2018, the Netherlands and Australia held Russia responsible and initiated legal action, while Russia denied involvement. In November 2022, a Dutch court convicted two Russians and one Ukrainian separatist of murdering all 298 people on board, stating Russia had control over the separatist forces.

MH17 was Malaysia Airlines’ second loss in 2014 – after the disappearance of MH370 in March - and remains the deadliest aircraft shoot-down in history.
