Like I said, such agreements do not have to be in writing. An oral agreement suffices and Nigerian courts have recognized this. The landmark case of USO v. IKETUBOSIN (1975) WRNLR 187 settles this. A ten year relationship, man married another woman, Supreme Court awarded damages. This situation is arguably stronger.
Five years of consistent relationship is solid supporting evidence but the foundation here is the WhatsApp conversations where marriage was discussed explicitly. That's not romantic speculation. That's a clear and definite promise, which is exactly what the courts require. The secret proposal planning strengthens this further. It demonstrates concrete intention, not just feelings.
Every financial contribution made during the relationship, fees, feeding, transportation, rent, all qualify as recoverable damages under Section 197 of the Evidence Act. Emotional distress, loss of opportunity to marry someone else, and social standing are also compensable.
The only genuine gap is corroboration. Documentary evidence like the chats, pictures, any family introduction or engagement discussions all satisfy Section 197. A third party witness who can testify to the arrangement closes that gap entirely.
But I'm curious, are you even a lawyer? Because confidently stating that a five year relationship and an agreement to marry are "very different things" without acknowledging that courts have consistently awarded damages in exactly these circumstances suggests you might want to open a law book before the next contribution.
NB: I am a law student.
@jemtabulous@swhat03 I believe they do, there must be a whatsapp chat to show it. Doesn't need to be signed. It can be oral. 5 years relationship is also a supporting evidence.
@AskMichaelTaiwo Eventually, even legacy code will become outdated. Every library must be updated. Knowledge that can't evolve is not true Knowledge. It's a limitation.
It's all a sham, business sham to exploit immigrants from third world. If you can write an exam in English. Graduate In English and be interviewed in English but you expect you to have a certificate for that English language. It's common sense to knoe it's a scam scheme. That's why they need it to expire. So you can repay for new exam.
@LaceVine Anytime I see this. I feel disrespected. How foolish must they have thought you're to be using this cheap trick to sell you?
Temu is better off with real prices and less fake promotional animations. I see through those BS.
@jon_d_doe If I'm dating you, I'm dating you NOT your family. Taking care of you is already a lot. I'm not directly or indirectly obliged to buy a pen for your relatives.
If you dont get this, we won't spend 2 weeks together.
I have seen this pattern before and I recognize it. The guy is obsessed over you, but he loves you as well. But you dont love him enough or at all. One thing is certain. He will outgrow this and by then. It'll be too late. Either you let me move on now, and you change. Otherwise you'll lose him and yourself.
I checked your profile and you're very average BTW. I pity the poor guy, probably first love. I know those heartache.
Invitation to date does not automatically means he'd fund your hungry stomach. You both are getting to know each other, and if you didn't want that, you can simply decline. Insofar as you had not declined, as an adult, you're responsible for what you use, eat and dispense it.
The only EXCEPTION is if he chooses, as a gentleman to help. Otherwise, he's not obliged to.
A date is an informal meeting to know each other, no one is doing anyone a favour and you shouldn't expect to be compensated by FOOD.
So next time if you dont have enough to feed yourself, don't consent to a date.
Canโt lie to you. If you donโt make a move, you will see literal clowns race past you. Clowns.
Nothing concern life with โI am a smart, educated, experienced personโ.
You donโt act, you remain there.
Plot twist. Nothing is free in marriage. In fact, it gets more expensive.
Nothing like free labor because if the man has to pay someone to do those labor, the money he'd spend is definitely not up to what he's spending on his woman which include, clothing allowance, shelter/housing, food, hairs, health, energy and the list is endless.
Nothing like free sex because both gender enjoys sex. In fact, Scientific study reveals women enjoys sex more, (even though men's testosterone levels are higher).
Nothing like free chef. She cook the food you both eat. If you'd to pay someone to cook, you won't be sharing the food with the person.
Wtf is free children? LOL. Isn't she the mother?
Emotional intelligence is a thing, the guy could have put a call through and she'd have said all these on phone.
There are some ladies that are bad at this, this one is fair. She just wants you to notice the little things, which actually means you care, which by extension is the whole point of relationship.
This is what emotional intelligence is about.
Most people assume that once a criminal charge is filed, the only way out is a full trial that may last for years. The law, however, provides another path in appropriate cases.
Through a plea bargain, a defendant accepts responsibility by pleading guilty, while the prosecution agrees to a reduced charge or recommends a lighter sentence, subject to the approval of the court.
The recent General Direction issued by the Attorney General of Anambra State is significant because it seeks to make plea bargaining an integral part of the prosecution process.
Rather than leaving the possibility of a plea bargain to the discretion or initiative of individual prosecutors, the Directive requires prosecutors to notify eligible defendants of the option before plea is taken by issuing them a Plea Bargain Form.
One provision of the Directive is particularly striking. It states that any charge or information commenced without first issuing the prescribed Plea Bargain Form may be discontinued for failure to comply with the Directive. That is a strong administrative mechanism designed to ensure that the policy is not ignored in practice.
If properly implemented, the Directive could have a meaningful impact on the administration of criminal justice in Anambra State.
Cases that do not require lengthy trials can be concluded much faster, prosecutors can devote more time to genuinely contested matters, and judges can reduce the backlog of criminal cases before them.
It may also help reduce the number of awaiting trial inmates, which remains one of the major contributors to the congestion of correctional centres across the country.
The Directive is also careful not to treat every offence alike. It excludes murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, and rape from its automatic application, requiring the express approval of the Attorney General before any plea bargain can be considered in those cases. That reflects an attempt to balance efficiency with the public interest in ensuring that serious violent crimes receive appropriate prosecutorial scrutiny.
Ultimately, the success of this policy will not be measured by the number of plea bargains concluded. It will be measured by whether it produces a criminal justice system that is faster, fairer, and more efficient without compromising accountability. That is the real significance of the Attorney General's Directive.
@wtffolly_ This is imessage so you definitely got the message. There is nothing like "busy" for 2 days. You clearly doesn't value him enough. If I were him, I won't even reply you anymore.
