The President of the United States just overthrew a foreign ruler and explained to the American people that this is about taking control of the oil reserves of a foreign nation. He said that the U.S. will “run the country” until a proper transition can take place and went right into how US oil companies will benefit from this takeover. He doesn’t understand the risks and costs involved with these poorly thought-out decisions that don’t make Americans any safer today than they were yesterday.
Nicolas Maduro is a brutal, illegitimate dictator who deserves to face justice. I want the people of Venezuela to be free to choose their own future, but if we learned anything from the Iraq war, it’s that dropping bombs or toppling a leader doesn’t guarantee democracy, stability or make Americans safer. More often, it leads to chaos or drags the US into a war and lengthy occupation. I don’t trust that this administration has a plan, timeline, or price tag for what comes next.
Over the past year, Trump’s foreign policy has been reckless, chaotic, self-serving, and unconstitutional. Congress should vote this week to reassert its authority on behalf of the American people before he oversteps again. I also want to recognize the professionalism and skill of the American service members involved in this operation. While I don’t agree with the administration’s justification for this, I’m thankful that no service members were killed or seriously injured.
Here's a piece of literature by me, suitable for seventeen-year-olds in Alberta schools, unlike -- we are told -- The Handmaid's Tale. (Sorry, kids; your Minister of Education thinks you are stupid babies.)
John and Mary were both very, very good children. They never picked their noses or had bowel movements or zits. They grew up and married each other, and produced five perfect children without ever having sex. Although they claimed to be Christian, they paid no attention to what Jesus actually said about the poor and the Good Samaritan and forgiving your enemies and such; instead, they practised selfish rapacious capitalism, because they worshipped Ayn Rand. (Though they ignored the scene in The Fountainhead where “welcomed rape” is advocated, because who wants to dwell, and also that would have involved sex and would de facto be pornographic. Well, it kind of is, eh?) Oh, and they never died, because who wants to dwell on, you know, death and corpses and yuk? So they lived happily ever after. But while they were doing that The Handmaid’s Tale came true and Danielle Smith found herself with a nice new blue dress but no job. The end.
Congratulations to new Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado for her courageous struggle to bring democracy to Venezuela. It should inspire those engaged in similar struggles around the world - and remind those of us lucky enough to live in America that we have a solemn responsibility to constantly preserve and defend our own hard-won democratic traditions.

BREAKING: Donald Trump gets devastating news as billionaire Mark Cuban and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman join forces and unite over 100 venture capitalists to back Kamala Harris for president.
And it gets even better...
"We spend our days looking for, investing in and supporting entrepreneurs who are building the future," reads the "VCs for Kamala" website. "We are pro-business, pro-American dream, pro-entrepreneurship, and pro-technological progress."
"We also believe in democracy as the backbone of our nation," the site goes on. "We believe that strong, trustworthy institutions are a feature, not a bug, and that our industry — and every other industry — would collapse without them."
"That is what’s at stake in this election. Everything else, we can solve through constructive dialogue with political leaders and institutions willing to talk to us. In this pivotal moment, we are united in our support for Vice President Kamala Harris," it reads.
The announcement is a powerful rebuke to far-right Silicon Valley billionaires like Elon Musk who have thrown their support behind Donald Trump's fascist movement in the hopes of more tax cuts.
Please retweet and ❤️ to thank Mark Cuban and his allies for supporting Kamala — and consider joining the growing exodus to Tribel, a new pro-democracy social network that is exploding in popularity because Twitter and Facebook are trying to stop its growth — which is only making Tribel grow even faster.
