I have arrived in Israel as the first President of the Republic of Somaliland to undertake a State Visit, and I am honoured by the warm welcome extended by my friend, President @Isaac_Herzog

For thirty-five years, the people of Somaliland have built a peaceful, democratic, and resilient nation. We asked the world: Do you see us? Israel answered first. Today marks a historic milestone in our journey and the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between Somaliland and Israel.

To the people of Somaliland: I carry your hopes and aspirations with me. Generations have struggled, sacrificed, and persevered to bring our nation to this moment. We will seize this opportunity with confidence, wisdom, and determination, always guided by the interests of our people and our Republic.

Today, history is being written, and Somaliland stands ready to forge a shared future founded on friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect.

✈️ Somalia’s new e-Visa system and its impact on Somaliland

1️⃣ Loss of Passenger Privacy and Autonomy

The new e-Visa system centralizes all traveler data under Somalia’s Ministry of Interior in Mogadishu. Every international passenger flying to Hargeisa or other Somaliland airports must first be registered through Mogadishu’s system. Somalia can therefore identify, track, or even deny entry to individuals traveling to Somaliland — undermining Somaliland’s control over its borders and passengers’ privacy.

2️⃣ Economic and Revenue Concerns

All e-Visa fees will be collected by Somalia, with no clear mechanism to return Somaliland’s share. This violates the Somalia–Somaliland Airspace Management Agreement, signed in Istanbul on July 9, 2013, under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). That deal required joint management and fair distribution of airspace revenues. Somalia’s unilateral e-Visa decision goes against both the spirit and the terms of that agreement.

3️⃣ Consequences for the Somaliland Diaspora

For the Somaliland diaspora, this policy creates a double-visa burden. Travelers may have to apply for Somalia’s e-Visa and still obtain a visa-on-arrival in Somaliland — adding cost, delay, and confusion.

The key question is: How will Somaliland respond — politically, technically, and economically — to protect its autonomy and the privacy of its citizens abroad?

Somalia’s e-Visa is not just a digital upgrade; it’s a political tool to reassert control over Somaliland’s skies, travelers, and revenue. Somaliland must urgently develop its own visa system and assert its airspace rights to safeguard sovereignty, privacy, and economic justice.
